MacBook Pro Only Turns On With A SMC Reset

Pretty much what the title says, I just found my macbook pro 15” from 2010 and tried turning it on (already replaced the battery), and it showed no signs of life. I then did a SMC reset (holding the power button for 10 secs, then plugging in the charger and waiting 10 more secs before releasing the power button) and it boots up, but the fans are at full blast and if I try to restart it, I have to redo the entire process. Is there a way to fix this, or do I just have to buy a new one?

Let’s try to run the onboard diagnostics. Restart your system and this time press the D key to enter into diagnostics.

Reference: Mac startup key combinations

Hopefully your systems EFI will allow it. Apple broke diagnostics with newer macOS versions ;-{

I did as you said, and it came up with an error message saying "apple.com/support" and under that "-3403D", but when I went to the Apple diagnostics page, that code was not on there.

Don't you love Apple! You need to visit them to get the error fixed but they no longer fix the 2010 models and they won't tell you the secret either!

So... Heres the big secret! You have a bad RAM module or the socket is damaged. Lets start up replacing the RAM with a fresh set make sure you get the correct DIMM's 2 - 204-pin PC3-8500 (1066 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM. The max your system supports is 8 GB (2 - 4 GB modules).

But! You likely also have a corruption on your drive as well. Time to reformat it and apply the best OS your system will support I would recommend sticking with Sierra. But we have a small wrinkle here as Apple messed up the OS installers! Heres a bit more on the mess If you've got an old macOS install image, it will probably stop working today. Luckily Apple did fix this on the last three OS installers. But you'll need to get the fix ones! Here's the fixed Sierra installer How to upgrade to macOS Sierra jump down to Step 4 for the link.

Follow this guide to create the needed OS installer drive How to create a bootable macOS Sierra installer drive Don't forget to make a full backup using TimeMachine and then use Migration Assistant to bring your stuff back over.
