Upgrade advice for an iMac 21.5" Late 2012 (EMC 2544)

Hello,

I was looking at what possible upgrades would make a noticeable difference for an iMac Late 2012 21.5 inch with i5 2.7GHz (333S) CPU.

Please bare with me as I try to give you all information you might need :)

I'm buying this second hand iMac and I find strange that the owner says the HDD is 750GB ( i thought 1GB was the minimum Apple sold it for). Once I see it myself I will be able to determine the actual size.

For now I'm just preparing a list of things I wanted to change and also looking at other possible upgrades.

My use of the machine will be for work, I'm marketer and mostly I use the browser a lot. I noticed Chrome making it harder than Safari on my laptop smoothness when I work. I also use Remote Desktop, TeamViewer and Skype video calls quite often. I do video and photo editing but not to a large extend.

I'm convinced to change the HDD for an SSD. ( was looking at just having the SSD connected via USB3.0 and boot the system on that one, the more I read it looks good. When I ask at technicians they tell me it's much better internal).I would like to know your opinion on that too.

And here is the list of the other upgrades I'm considering. Would you mind rate the from 0 to10 (for example) on how much noticeable will they be or on what kind of use are they really worth it?

- Ram up to 16 GB (now it's 8GB)

- CPU i7 3.1GHz (3770S)

- Considering I see the PCIe card port (I could not get a clear answer online) I would add a Blade of 250 or 480 GB. Will that actually make it a lot faster than the SATA SSD? The only related answer I found is on this post:

FYI: Apple did offer a 750 GB HD drive originally so that is not surprising.

Unless your system came with a blade SSD either discreetly or as part of a Fusion Drive your system doesn’t have the PCIe/NVMe interface so your options are limited to the SATA interface. As far as the Samsung 970 EVO M.2 SSD that’s not possible here as that is a blade drive not a SATA drive.

I would upgrade the SATA drive to a SSD or a hybrid SSHD and get to 16GB of RAM.

Your system is likely the SATA only model so that means the drive you need to get is either:

If you’re game upgrading the CPU would get you more performance, but do you really needed it? You don’t sound like someone that would be pushing their system that hard that the i7 would offer that much more over the i5 you have.

The RAM and SSD upgrades will get you what you need.

One last point! You’ll need this OWC In-line Digital Thermal Sensor for Hard Drive Upgrade for 27" iMacs 2012 and Later. Apple contracted for a special version of drive so the drives internal sensor could be used for the systems thermal control via SMC. So when you replace your current drive you’ll encounter a problem as the sensor access will be gone! This in-line sensor replaces that sensor.

Just a comment, I upgraded 5 iMacs A1419 (27 inches 1 late 2012, 3 late 2013 and 1 late 2015 k5 ) SSD UPGRADE+ Nvme + adapter no one I had added thermal sensor, and no ones had any fan spinning fast problem. I wonder why I reading about this sensor needs. I would like somebody tells me what I'm missing. Kindly thanks

Thank you very much @danj! Regarding the Sensor, I'm asking about an iMac 21.5" not 27". Is that sensor needed too for that model?

@acmenahbackup - Your right, my bad! I had a 27" on my desk giving be fits ;-{

Your 21.5" doesn't need it as its using a 2.5" HDD not 3.5"

@danj @samuelmgm12 thx to both of you for helping with your comments. I updated the post with an image of the specs. I had a last question, which brand of RAM? I have access to Kingston on store or I can order other ones online. Currently it has 2x4GB modules. I plan to get 2x8GB.

the one in store is Kingston KVR16LS11/8 (https://www.jib.co.th/web/index.php/prod...)

@acmenahbackup - Your system needs 204 pin, DDR-3L, 1600 MHz SO-DIMMs. The Kingston SO-DIMM's in your link will be just fine.
