Input/Output Error when replacing HD

I just replaced my internal HD on my MacBook Pro - all has been successful thus far, but now am trying to install OS on the new hard drive and keep coming up against a "Input/Output Error" when I try to partition or erase the hard drive.

I have gone through this entire process already with another MacBook Pro and replaced that HD successfully without this issue.

From the research I've done from other threads it seems like maybe there an issue with the actual HD itself OR a cable? But I am hoping for an easier resolution to this problem....

any help?

update: just replaced the old HD back into computer and it functions perfectly. Problem with the new HD then?

Gekozen oplossing

Buy a cheap USB 2.5" sata external enclosure, put your new drive in it and try to partition it (guid partition). If it works then simply clone your old disk to the new disk using SuperDuper (free download) and install it in your MBP.

thank you so much - this solution worked perfectly.

I was able to copy the whole HD while connected with USB then install.
