WiFi and cellular not working but hotspot working

Hello everyone,

I have found this iPad mini 4 128gb for sale for 150 euros and talked it down to 120. The seller is saying that they have replaced the iPad’s screen (at a shop where apparently they had been warned that the wifi might be damaged) and that after that the Wifi and cellular are not working, but it can still be connected to a hotspot. They’re also saying the Wifi might be restored through Cydia - not sure where they got this idea form.

Now I have three questions:

  1. Does this seem like a plausible story?
  2. If the ipad is connecting to a hotspot, would you assume that the wifi is working and that it may be a software issue?
  3. Would you buy it?

Hardware cannot be fixed with software. I don’t have much experience on the Mini 4 but I wouldn’t be surprised wifi and cellular antennas got damaged while removing the glass to replace the screen, it may happen when one has little or no experience with iPads. I would buy it but I can fix the antennas myself..can you ? If you’re not ready to use it without wifi and cellular, you have to add the costs of parts and repair to you initial purchase price. You may try a full restore just not to leave any chance out, but chances a restore or Cydia will fix the issues are very very low.

@sammyz Yes and no, iPads generally have two wifi antennas, one for the 2.4Ghz and the other one for the 5Ghz frequencies that have typical different ranges and data specs. The same goes for 3G and 4G separate antennas although they are both cellular. I suspect just one out of four survived the screen replacement.
