Why does my external hard drive keep making this weird noise when it is plugged in either my laptop or PC, both are Windows.

It was working the other day now it won't

Please help.

You say "It was working the other day now it won't". Did you drop it?

I'm not entirely clear if your external drive still shows up in Windows, inspite of the noise.

If it does and files show up copy the important files from it immediately.

yes I dropped it...

now I can see the drive, bt can't open...

Drive mosty likely physically damaged. But there is always the possibilty that an application like "Spinrite" by Steve Gibson might recover it.

It sounds like part of the drive has failed. Either the bearings in the motor, the heads crashed, or such.

  • Does the weird noise sound like one or a combination of these?:
  • Grinding
  • Chirping
  • Rattling
  • Screeching
  • Loud vibration

If so, it’s probably failed. If the data is worth sending the drive for recovery, do take note that the more you attempt to use it the less likely anyone can recover the data.

It is highly likely that it failed. Data recovery can be expensive, so I would recommend cutting losses and getting a new drive. If the data to be recovered is more valuable to you than the cost of data recovery services, then go for it. Just note that no one can guarantee that they can recover the data and most will charge you for even trying.

It does sound like the drive has failed. If you need the data on it you’ll need to send the drive into a data recovery service. Hopefully they can recover it.

If you are moving your drive around you might want to look at getting a SSD drive as they are more rugged. HDD’s don’t like being moved while they are running.
