Help me diagnose iPhone X Face ID move iPhone a little lower

Hi! I have an iphone x with face id and selfie camera portrait mode not working. For the moment I don't know if any of the internal components were changed or not.

Here is what I know:

  • face id fails to detect a face during the setup process. Keeps sending the two messages: move iphone a little lower/higher
  • Animoji works ok though
  • Flood illuminator also works as I can see it with an older camera
  • Proximity sensor and autobrightness are functionally
  • Attention thing works (when picking up the phone it turns display on if it detects any human face)
  • Front camera works (without any blur) aside from the portrait mode (It says move further away and only takes a normal photo)
  • Back camera works ok, portrait mode is functioning
  • Phone has liquid indicator turned red (unfortunately I haven't saw this before buying it)
  • The phone seems to have been opened up before as the adhesive was loosen whet I opened it up.
  • I have tried to clean the dot projector and the infrared camera along with the lens on the front glass but without luck
  • I have tried also the DFU restore, and every type of reset
  • Iphone is running ios 12.3

My question is that if the display is changed without transferring the other components from the glass assembly, will iphone send the faceid unavailable error or it could just never let you setup it like in my case?

Has anybody been able to repair an iphone x with these symptoms?

Thanks a lot!

I have the exact same problem too and the local technician told me it cant be repaired. I suspect it’s the dot projector that is faulty/blocked I wanna be sure before I open the phone up.

Any advice?

Same issue...just randomly quit working and when trying to reset it doesn't appear to have the ability to recognize or record my facial features. It just keeps asking me to move the phone up & down with my face 10-20 inches from the face-block. Super frustrating b/c I take good care of my stuff so there is no reason it shouldn't work.

by

Same here - higher lower 10-20 inches but everything else works. WTH

I was having this issue...just kept telling me to move iPhone higher/lower. I just cut it off for about 30 seconds and powered it back on and it set up fine. Mine only did this after I erased my original Face ID I had set up and tried to reset a new one. It’s working now...good luck!

These are @%^$$@$# &&^&^$^ people of IPhone . I am sure iPhone is make fool of people . I am also facing the same type of issue . What is the resolution . Please help here

I have yet been able to find a solution to the problem, but I have found a fairly definitive way to test for the issue.

Answer to your first question: If an LCD is changed and you do not swap the components on the LCD, Face ID will error out when you try to set it up. It will also tell you that Face ID failed to initialize when your phone first boots up.

To answer your second question there is a lengthy explanation, but I will try to keep it short.

I made a compilation of images including using the image provided by iFixit. The iPhone X flex has a proximity sensor (Red circles) and Flood Illuminator (Orange Square) - The second flood illuminator is with the camera assembly, but it won’t turn on until it starts to “record” your face.

I have found that the flood illuminator on the flex will not turn on for phones that have an issue with recognizing your face. This is where it will say “move your iphone higher, then move your iPhone lower” over and over again without ever successfully recording your face.

You can easily test this issue by using another phones camera to able to see the infared lights. Compare to the image below.

Bottom Left - Functional Face ID. You can even see two Purple dots through the LCD, so you don’t have to take apart a phone to test this issue.

Bottom Right, only the proximity sensor IR LED is working. Face ID will not work.

Hi @macalegin ! Thanks for sharing your experience!

From this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PV7JMZzz... it seems that if you replace either the front camera assembly or the earpiece flex you will end up with the same symptoms as in my case.

So you one could tell if an iphone x has any component related to face id replaced?

I have added in my question a photo from the sensors while trying to configure face id. It seems that only the proximity sensor is staying on and no signs of life from the flood iluminator.

Hi Paul,

Thanks for the link.

To answer your question of whether you can find out if components have been replaced…

I recommend using 3U tools. http://www.3u.com/

Whether to fully trust this software on a personal computer is another question, but this tool is loaded with features including a full report showing if parts are original or if they have likely been changed.

Just turn off the iPhone completely, then turn on again. Go to setup and it should work. Modym02

Thank you. Sometimes, we miss the basic troubleshooting step. Just by rebooting the phone and this issue was gone. I was able to setup the faceID

Ir camera,Flood illuminator, front camera both are necessarily need from the same like fingerprint .

Apple encrypt this all to compatibility for only one iPhone.

Hi! I know this. My question is if you change any of these components will the phone send you a message saying face id is unavailable? Or it can also have the symptoms that I have described. I'm trying to figure out if I still have the original parts

by

Mine is doing the higher lower thing I’ve been talkin to Apple support for two days now they basically said they can’t help

by

Same for me. I haven’t called Apple but my facial recognition quit working so I deleted it and when I tried to reset it just says move lower, move higher.

by

In had the same problem. I went to apple and they gave me a new phone. It is a known problem. Go in and get it tested, they will swap it out, but just make sure you’ve backed your phone up.

I know this is a little old but I am having the same exact issue. My liquid indicator is also red although there is no sign of moisture inside the phone. I can see that the proximity sensor is on but the flood illuminator doesn't turn on. The flood illuminator identifies the face and makes sure it is in frame, so since that isn't working it keeps saying to move the iPhone lower and higher. My question is: have either of you tried replacing the rear camera module? That is what Apple recommends its employees to do first before replacing the phone. I am considering doing it but thought I'd ask before spending money on that.

Thanks!

PS: The only parts of the phone that would disable Face ID if replaced is the front facing sensors that include the Infrared Camera, Dot Projector, and Flood Illuminator. The Flood Illuminator is part of the Earpiece, Microphone, and Proximity Sensor module so replacing any of those would also replace the Flood Illuminator which would disable Face ID. At that point you would get an error saying there is an issue detected with the True Depth Camera or one just saying it is disabled. You wouldn't get to the part saying to move your phone lower or higher.

Why would replacing the rear camera module fix the face id issue if the issue is caused by one of those front facing sensors?

by

I’m not really sure other than possibly a software connection between the two. It is what apple tells its employees to do with this issue before issuing a replacement device. They don’t give a reason.

I had the same issue for 2 days and it was so annoying, later I just rebooted the phone by holding the power and volume up button and restarted it and it worked right away. Hope it helps !

Hi in question to the iPhone X Face ID move little higher/lower on the Face ID set up says all components are genuine otherwise it would say Face ID failed when iPhone first boots and when trying to set up Face ID I had the same problem on 4 iPhone X where it had a cracked screen to dropped and all turned out to be the flood illuminator so what I did was removed the flood illuminator and light sensor and put them on a genuine iPhone X earpiece flex and after Face ID is working again also if you go into camera and to portrait mode turn to front camera and you’ll see the natural light will be not available also it will move further away.

What do you mean when you removed the flood illuminator and light sensor and put them on an iphone x earpiece flex? Could I just replace those elements on my phone (flood illuminator has failed).

not really a solution, but bit more digging around the subject.

I was doing a little bit more digging around my iPhone with the same issue, and I discovered that the actual thing that is not working is ambient light sensor. As it doesn’t dim the display automatically.

that was often the case with iPhone 6/ 6s that had 3rd party displays and the solution was to scratch the paint inside the display where the sensor is. Then cover it with sharpie or any other permanent marker. Probably 3rd party paint was to thick.

I reproduced those same steps for iPhone X, but it didn’t help. From what I read, even though the FaceID may be transferred from one iPhone to the other, Apple will disable ambient light sensor when iPhone detects 3rd party screen, essentially causing faceID and selfie portrait to stop working.

maybe someone’s get a bit more knowledge on that thing?

Had the same problem. FACEID no longer recognized me. Every time I tried to reset FACEID, I kept getting “Move iPhone higher/lower”. Turned phone off and on again. Reset FACEID with no problem.
