You could have a very simple problem or a much more complex issue!

Given the systems age I suspect your PRAM battery has died so the settings are being lost every time you unplug the power plug (vampire draw). So the first thing we need to do is just replace the battery. Here’s the guide you’ll need to follow iMac G5 17" Model A1058 PRAM Battery Replacement

Once you’ve replaced it see what happens when you power up the system did anything change?

The iMac G5 is known to have bad capacitors. If the CMOS battery doesn’t help, check the capacitors to be 100% sure they are not blown.I won the G5 capacitor lottery, but you may not.

If the capacitors aren’t bad, then you probably have a hard drive issue. These G5’s are old enough the original drives are 14-15 years old so many of them are beginning to die. I was VERY fortunate with my 20” to get a newer 320GB drive so I can sleep knowing my drive won’t implode for no good reason because it isn’t the original (I had a hunch because it’s using a much smaller PCB then any old WD I remember). However, mine is also from ~2009-10, so mine is only a few years younger but it’s also a WD so I’m not too concerned about it. The guide for this can be found here.

Sometimes the RAM fails (or a bad configuration is installed), but it’s typically the hard drive. Again, the guide can be found here.

As far as the OS goes, I’m going to mirror what @mayer told me about my iMac and the software situation I ran into to a point. Refer to Where can I find an ISO for this machine? to get an idea on what you can do to get software. In my case I went with 10.4 because I wanted the OS9 Classic environment on a non-OS9 booting machine, but if you do not need it and have 2GB of RAM available 10.5 is a good candidate for such a machine. Buy these discs online if you do NOT own a Mac; if you own a Mac you may find them online (Most of them are .toast, so unless you want to rename it to .bin and find a burning tool that works with it, you need Roxio Toast), but it’s not something I intend to help you do here. I’m firmly going to stand my ground on buying them online.

@nick - Very True! This system was effected by the Capacitor Plague . But the symptoms is either a bad hard drive or just a dead PRAM battery. The cap issue would be shutdowns or just hard failure.

I was told I won the iMac lottery with mine @danj. I mentioned it just in case or so the OP knows about it and has a lead on what to check if the CMOS battery, hard drive and RAM do not help.

@nick & @mayer sometimes its best to solve the simpler problems first ;-}

I agree - I mentioned the more extreme situations just in case it isn't a dead CMOS battery. My battery was at 3.07V, so I think the Panasonic cells are long-lasting to the point you may not need to change it very often.

I may need to change mine (lost the Apple bong when I checked it) if the PRAM/SMC reset doesn't help. It will probably come back because the battery is at 3V.
