I replaced the hard drive not the optical drive does not read

I upgraded my MacBook Pro 15 with a 1 TB SSD. It now runs with the speed of summer lightning. However, my optical drive quit working properly.

When I load a disc it spins and makes the normal noises. Then it spits out the disc. I need this in order to load Windows on the dark side.

It worked fine before the upgrade. I even put the old hard drive back in and it still behaves the same. It must be something not related to the hard drive.

Any suggestions

If yhis came into my shop, the and I know the symptoms, the first thing I would do is replace the optical with a know working one. These drives are now cheap.

Google Apple part number 661-4702 for the latest version.

Have you tried using a head cleaning disk. Sometimes dust gets stuck across the lens set. Also you might need to clean your disk as well.

I just purchased an Insignia CD/DVD/Blu-ray cleaning disc. I ran it through several times and noticed no change. I have done some more experimentation & found some CD's work consistantly while others do not. This seems to have nothing to do with the condition of the media or the type of data. The ones that work are one audio cd I recorded and burned onto a recordable DVD disk, The OSX Leopard startup disk, & my fine woodworking magazine CD. The two Microsoft Windows XP Professional CD do not work. Could this be a weak laser of glitchy optical drive? Any other tests I should run before I buy a new optical drive?

Also, I have tried a USB outboard optical drive and it does not seem to get power. I tried putting a CD in it and it wouldn't take it. This unit works fine on my IMAC

I think you're hitting two different issues. First your external optical drive will need drivers for MacOS to work So that can explain why it's not working.

As for your internal drive it sounds like you're hitting a compatibility issue with it. The original optical drive this series had is a 6x Slot-loading SuperDrive (DVD+R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW). Did someone put in a Slot-loading 24x CD-ROM/4x DVD-ROM drive into your system?

"Did someone put in a Slot-loading 24x CD-ROM/4x DVD-ROM drive into your system?" No it is the original optical drive. Never been replaced.
