Brown smudge/spot on the projection image about 1/6th of total picture

I have a DB T20 that is projecting a brown smudge/ spot on the screen. It looks like it’s on the lcd if I look through the front lens. I know can see the lens is fine. What could it be? Is it worth opening it to take a look? Also it makes a buzzing sound like a fan sticking for first minute on power up then works fine.

Update (01/13/2021)

Ok So there is a SOLUTION. If you want to fix your little projector you need to order the part below or one of the same dimensions. This part is a little bit thicker than the stock one but if you carefully press it in or widen the side guides a little bit it will fit and work perfectly. I ordered two so I would have a back up. It did take over a month for the part to come. I wrote it off because they never sent an email to say it had shipped, but eventually it did show up. That's ordering Chinese parts for you. Good Luck! I just placed an order for that part! My projector also has the same brown smudge, so hopefully this fixes it! Same dimensions, so crossing fingers!

I think the most important thing with these little units and the issue with the polarized lens burning is you have to keep them from over heating.

Don’t leave them on when you’re not using. And keep them ventilated with fresh air, a fan, or in air condition.

That said I have not had to replace the glass again since first doing it with the part from aliexpress.com so it may have been a manufacture error in the original glass and unit as well.

Any suggestions on what fan would be good to replace with?

Hi Liz. I’m not sure. Did your fan burn out or are you looking to upgrade?

After changing to the new lens from the link I haven’t had any issues. It’s been I think a year or maybe two. I am pretty careful not to leave the projector on for long periods when not watching something. But I do occasionally watch something for hours at a time and the new lens has been just fine.

I believe I have the same problem as you. DbPower sent me a replacement unit which is now displaying the same symptoms after several months of use. The noise is the fan squealing due to lack of lubrication at the bearings. The brown smudge is a result of improper cooling and overheating of the LED light circuit as a result of the defective fan (my second unit did the same thing because cooling is insufficient overall). Without taking it apart, I can only assume that it is the LED itself or a plastic lens or filter within the lighting circuit.

Appreciate your comment but it seems it only occurs when I enable linear gamma mode to make my dark areas brighter ..no issues when I play in photo gamma mode though dark areas are darker.must be a software issue .have written to nebula and my projector is th nebula cosmos max 4k...

It’s likely just exasperating it. If you’re handy it takes only about 15 minutes to get down to the polarization filter and you’ll be able to see if the film is burnt or not.

@Max Nuccio Thanks Max! Ordered the part (actually followed suit and ordered 2) and managed to put the thing back together successfully (and it still turns on!). Thanks for the aliexpress link and advice. Feeling accomplished even though it didn't require anything but a screwdriver...

You are correct. I diagnosed the same thing after disassembling. I found a thin glass filter with polarizing film on it which had burned from the fan sticking. The fan may have stuck from dust, lack of lube, or running the unit too long. After searching for ages for the lens which would seem like an easy and cheap replacement (the unit does not work properly without it) I found a couple from China but the cost plus a fan was about the same as a new unit some of which have upgraded fans.

If you get another unit from db look into putting a better fan in maybe? It’s not that bad to disassemble and the videos online are good guides

Hope this helps

Hey there! Unfortunately I couldn’t find the part but did get a replacement unit. It’s just a small rectangular glass lens with polarized film on it maybe 2x3” if you can find the lens it’s an easy swap to pull it out. One option would be to find a unit for parts and pull it. What happens is the film on the lens heats up and starts to burn causing the brown spotting. The replacement I have is around a year and now slowly doing the same thing so I am searching for a parts unit, the lens, or just an upgraded unit that won’t have this issue.

Overall its a great little projector albeit and little weak on the light power but it does a fine job at night!

Ok fellow brown smudge DbPower T20 users! I may have found a fix. You may want to wait till I get and install the polarizer filter before you order, but…….. they ARE available on aliexpress. See link below. I ordered two for like $15 with shipping, just because it will probably happen again. The projector is poorly designed and doesn’t stay cool enough which heats up the polarizer film on the thin glass and burns it.

It’s pretty easy to get to the part in the projector just follow the tear down guide on ifixit.com and pull the middle glass filter that looks like the item below. Reinstall the new part the same way as the old and reassemble. I’ll do an update when I get and install the part. My guess is it will take a while because it’s coming from some far off destination.

Ok Namaste ;)

Hey guys,

Just checking if you managed to repair the projector, I have the same problem, 4 brown drop shaped spots and this happened after leaving the projector under the sunlight. I want to see if I can repair it or if it’s better to just get a new one.

Thanks for your answers!

I’m still in search. The second unit i received did the same thing after a year or so. I’ll do some searching again. The closest i found a couple years ago was from China. But 15 or 20 dollars for the little glass filter seemed too expensive then. I’m thinking buying used units for parts might be a good idea

I had developed same expanding brown spot problem with FEBFOXs projector unit. It was on sale and checked most of the boxes off on my list. So I contacted Febfox direct and they sent me a new unit in about a day or two. They asked me to send the burned one to them for quality inspection on their dime. Don’t know about next time. But it’s a lot easier fix than my 4 and counting LCD TV’s that blacked out. Those are too big to ship out easily or bring to repair shop. Must order the part and then have repairman make a house call. It cost almost as much as new tv or monitor. So the projector is a great option. So happy! And relieved to find a fix in case future brown darkens the screen again.
