My MacBook Bent Too Far Back

My friend sat down on my open Macbook Pro (2009) and there was a huge snapping noise. There are no problems. The only thing is that my screen now goes completely 180 degrees back. I need to know if I can fix the hinge or god forbid get this fixed by a professional for money because I just dropped so much money on this laptop and I am a broke college student. There really are no problems and everything is working fine; it’s just that the screen goes completely flat when bent back. It is not loose when opened unless it’s opened a little bit past 90 degrees. Is this even a problem? I’d really prefer to not have to go to a computer repair shop.

If it opens 180 degrees hinges are probably gone, but there’s no way to tell if the screen is fixable without inspection. You’ll need to remove the display assembly to access the plastic clutch cover under which you’ll find hinges. The plastic cover needs to be pushed to the right about 1 cm. first and then lifted. You can use the following guide for reference:

You'll need a new set of hinges as well.

It's not a complete 180, and it's not even loose. It's just almost completely flat when pushed back. I'm willing to follow the instructions of that video but I am eighteen and know nothing about computers and I am deathly afraid of breaking it somehow. In your personal opinion, if you had a computer that just bent too far back but showed no other problems, would you fix it like this with no experience?

Kristina, if you can use it without too many headaches you may keep it as it is for some time, but keep in mind you have an unstable setting there and you have to use extra care in handling your Mac. The job is not particularly difficult, but it requires some tools and some care to start with. You will probably need spare hinges for replacement as @danj pointed out and it might also be so that the screen frame got damaged..if that's the case you'd need a full new screen assembly too, hard to tell without previous inspection what the damage is exactly.

It might as well be a fun and instructing task, maybe ask for some help from a friend who is familiar with a little of DIY. Don't forget to unplug the battery before working on the Mac and in case you feel insecure take a couple of pics and post them here, somebody will be around to help for sure :)
