shut down iPhone with black screen

After battery replacement, iphone 3g's screen is black. Phone itself works, it rings on incoming calls and texts. For all I've been reading here it probably has to do with the connectors.

Question is: how do I shut the phone down with a non-working display? I do not want to re-plug those connectors with voltage on. $^!@ non-removable battery! Any hints greatly appreciated!

All attempts to switch it off by doing the typical gesture failed. I know this because it's tethered and the Mac gives me status. So touch digitizer also seems to be off, too.

See if your Mute/Vibrate switch works, if so you can use it to verify iPhone is OFF. Connected to Computer, or iTunes or the program you are using, so you can tell when the iPhone shuts OFF. Hold at same time Home and Power buttons for about 3-5 seconds till iPhone goes OFF, then release the buttons. To be certain check with Mute/Vibrate switch.

Hi Brad, thanks for your speedy reply.

The steps you mention above don't work for me. Device remains ON. But good to know anyway, that this 5-sec-home-power do a shutdown (on proper hardware).

Maybe the connection which brings the home button to logic board is the same as for the graphics which doesn't work? Does anyone know the assignment of what function go over what ribbon/connection?

Is there a (Mac-)software that powers down the device?

Thanks a lot!

I love you! My screen is unresponsive and I wasn't looking forward to a long wait for my 3G to go flat. Holding the home and power buttons just until the slide instruction disappears from the screen is perfect. Thank you for showing me this!

Hi Brad and others,

finally, I managed to fix it. Shutdown now works as expected and as described. Problem was that the home button wasn't able to work properly due to a contact loss right underneath itself. The two contact clips weren't able to reach the mating surfaces. After fixing that, the device shut down after 5 sec. button press and the way was clear to inspect the connections that caused the display to stay dark. Thanks again!
