Left speaker broken? Odd sounds coming from it.

Hi,

After hearing a high-pitched sound and then some other strange sounds just after opening my laptop I think the speaker has trouble with high-pitched sound and so on.

Do you guys think it’s repairable and if yes do you have a guide coming up?

Thanks for this wanderful web site.

I have the same problem, (I got the new replacement Pro only in 2019 Sept. just 7 months. now the guaranteed passed). I found the left speaker have bad sound, noisy and cracking. I called Apple, that cannot resolve my problem, due to COVID period, Apple stores are closed, and the authorized service provider did not answer the phone, and no way to left message. Finally I checked Sound from System Preferences and adjust the sound to right side, which sounds good, but now only one side works well, but at least it works!

@chingg - You have other options than Apple! If your upto it you could replace the speaker on your own. Or, you could find someone local who can help you.

Where do you live country and nearest city maybe we can aim you to someone!

@danj I have the same exact issue as the person you replied to right down to the same year model and down to the same side being affected. Muffled and crackled sounding with static. The thing is I did replace it myself with a replacement from iFixit and that did nothing, did not change it at all, and it's the same as before as with the new one in.

@seblg - Sorry no guides yet on the newer Touch Bar systems. Even so, the speakers are replaceable! Sadly they are glued in so they are hard to pull off without damaging them! Here’s the parts:

If you review the Demontage van de MacBook Pro 15" Touch Bar Step12 you can see how well its glued in. Make sure you’ve ID’d the bad speaker using the balance control within the Sound control panel to bias which speaker is active. Also don’t forget the Left Speaker looking in from the bottom is the Right Speaker!

Apple did have a recall for your system for blown speakers. I would try to see if you can get it fixed for free under that.

iFixit adhesive remover is helpful for removing the speakers.

@ajcooke01 - Not a good idea! The solvent could melt the plastic! Better to just use heat and some isopropyl alcohol.

door

@danj Isn't the point here to replace the busted speaker? I mean, it won't be reused in any way shape or form so I don't see damaging the broken speaker being a problem...

door

True, taking out a bad speaker is not worth saving. But! You need to have it stay intact to remove it completely. If you melt it so the case breaks apart you'll end up with a harder repair.

The other issue here is you don't want the solvent to damage other parts like the keys. Unlike the older Unibody & Retina keycaps which you can easily replace the newer ones are much harder and if you break the tabs on the butterfly it makes it even harder!

"Apple did have a recall for your system for blown speakers" Where can I find this? Thanks.

I had a right speaker that was outputting static on this model. I just completed a display assembly replacement and a bonus was the speaker is now working flawlessly. I’m wondering if just taking the bottom case off and blowing out any dust might do the trick for some with this issue.

I think you've discovered a precursor of a failing backlight cable failure!

What happens is the ribbon cable starts to breakdown the shields start to short out against the backlight lines causing a bit of feedback on the ground which is picked up by the analog amp of the speakers.

So the act of replacing the display resolves the shorting lines.

Oh, that makes sense. Thanks!

The part looks like a perfect match for my busted left speaker for my 2016 Macbook Pro. However, I asked a rep if the adhesive gasket came with the part. I was told that yes it did. FYI - the adhesive gasket does NOT come with tis part. You can find them on eBay but I have read many posts on different sites that caution about double stick tape. If its not applied perfectly, you'll get rattle from your new speaker.

Hi,

The issue can come from a high temperature under the speaker (CPU, GPU, battery charger input, etc.). This cause the treeble or the lowd diaphragm of the speaker (circular membrane) slightly melt away, soften and doesn't work properly anymore. Then the speaker cannot transmit correctly the sound. The solution is to replace the speaker (not very hard, tuto can be found on the internet, only need Philips screw driver) and to find why the temperature increases a lot. Sometimes fans must also be replaced if they show signs of ageing or simply cleaned by removing dust inside.

Hope it will help.
