Suddenly showing vertical lines and weird color on the display

Hello,

Today I just turned on my 2017 MacBook Pro 13” Touch Bar system it’s suddenly showing some weird vertical lines along with weird color for everything on the screen.

I tried to reset NVRAM and SMC but no luck. I also tried to hook to the external monitor and it works fine with it!

So this is maybe not software related issue but hardware. I did find out that when I tried to close the display lid, on certain angle the screen becoming normal again! So maybe this is just a problem with the display cable coming loose?

This is not the first time the screen was having an issue, back I also got some weird black lines appear on the bottom of the screen if I use the laptop for certain hours/when the laptop becoming hot and it will disappear when i turn of the laptop for some hours

I live in a region where there is not authorized Apple service provider, only some random computer shop that claim they can fixe Apple product so, at least I want to know do I need to replace the entire screen? Or just open the system up and maybe fix the display cable that loosen?

Note: my system is out of warranty

This is a known issue with the newer Fn & Touch Bar systems. The design Apple used is very different than the older Retina models. Sadly, you need a new display assembly which is around $700 USD alone. Here is a view of the connections:

The problem is the cables from the panel can’t be replaced (or reseated) you need to replace the full assembly with the T-CON board as the cables are soldered to it as well. Only the backlight and iSight camera cables can be disconnected.

Frankly, you really should find your way to an Apple authorized service center or ship your system directly to Apple for repair. The reason here is I suspect Apple will offer a rebate as this is happening on to many systems and quite a few people have successfully gotten Apple to fix it for free even after the warranty had expired.

Commentaar:

oh i see, i reach out to the local “unauthorized” apple service and they told me that they can repair the screen (if the screen is the faulty one) for around $300 or if the vga is the faulty one for around $150… is it true? is there any chance there is a some kind of fake screen or replicas? seeing the price difference kinda make me worried.

and any idea what caused this? i am afraid if i replace with the new one this problem will occur in the future again….

Replacing the display is not overly hard labor-wise. The availability of the part and its cost is the issue! So far there are no other party displays available that work. The only possibility is getting a junker system with a good display and swapping it over. I've done that twice now. The one person who claimed to have gotten a display directly from China got a fake that didn't work at all.

Sadly, Apple is making servicing of their newer systems almost impossible!

Don't forget this is a design defect in your system! It should be covered under an extended warranty program.

Sadly Apple is dragging their feet on this. They already have their hands full with the keyboard issues so I think its still to your advantage to ship it to Apple to get repaired so you get the full rebate once Apple gets with it! If you let the local guy fit is you won't be able to recover the cost and you'll likely won't be able to get it fixed later on if it fails again.

From my limited experience that sounds like the LCD screen has failed. It’s less likely to be the cable.

I bought a second hand one for a laptop and fitted it myself, you’ll often find a video on U-Tube but I work on the principle that if someone put it together, I can take it apart again. the screws will be hidden by rubber pads or inserts, prise them out carefully! take your time and lots of photos, don’t over tighten the screws when it goes back together.
