Upgrade memory from 128 MB to 256 MB

How do I remove and replace the MAIN memory module in a HP LaserJet 400 M401n?

I see the “access door”, but that is only for ADD-ON memory, correct? Where is the main 128 MB module? I simply want to remove it, and replace it witha 256 MB module.

I believe the first 128 MB of RAM is soldered onto the logic board. The socket is there to allow you to add RAM.

Thanks! I was incorrectly assuming that the initial 128 MB was a removable module. The manual only lists proprietary font modules as being acceptable for add-ons. I will try it, but I am thinking now that the printer may not be able to address all 256 MB on the module that I purchased.

HP officially doesn’t support memory upgrades on the M401 series. It has the slot, but they do not sell memory modules like the p2055 and older models once allowed with a laptop SODIMM. On top of this, the module is proprietary, so HP probably uses it as a service port OR had plans and abandoned it during development. HP solders it to the formatter board on these printers; the M401dne (which I managed to secure for next to nothing with 24k pages, shove the toner DRM whre the sun don't shine HP :-) ) has 256MB onboard, as do the others like the dn, dw, and x (x=dw with paper tray). The n is only 128MB and will ALWAYS BE a 128MB printer.

It's used as an "expansion slot" for these cards:

  • BarDIMM Pro, Jetmobile
  • MicrDIMM Pro, Jetmobile
  • TypeHaus Fonts and Barcodes Solutions, TypeHaus, Inc.
  • Asian Fonts, JITCO, Ltd.
  • BarDIMM® Box, Jetmobile
  • BarSIMM 1.9, Jetmobile
  • EIO Hard-Disk for LaserJet Series, Oberon Service SRL
  • Ethernet to Token Ring Router (ETRR), Ringdale
  • EuroForm Barcode 100, EuroForm A/S

Not on the M401N model/Series. I'm not able to pull mine out to show you without moving my Vista 32 games system.

I'll move the computer if you want to see the slot since I own a proprietary slot printer. It's awkward so I'm only going to do it if you genuinely need to see the slot.

@danj in lieu of moving the printer, this is the M401n/a formatter board.

Years later (and thanks to depreciation), I now have more info from a used dne I got due to the price, which is essentially similar to the dw/dn but uses the 2-line LCD from the n and lacks WiFi, so essentially a cheaper dn. The difference is in the formatter; HP spins the same board but tweaks for the a (not sold in the US), n (base US), dn/dw (touchscreen variant w/USB port), dne (2-line LCD w/o WiFi; same as the dn with the cheaper LCD) and x (see the dw, but with the paper tray in the box). Same board, different Spare# for each unit with 2 RAM configurations. Maybe different firmware for the touchscreen units, but I haven't had any luck with them on the PC front so I overlooked them more than I entertained them; they're all too high for my liking. Plus with these "end of an era" HPs, take what you can get; even a "n".

Even the "new to me" dne had an empty slot; indicating it's not used for much.
