My Mac Mini does not recognize the new second drive Transcend 820 SSD

hello, i have a problem:

I have a Mac Mini Late 2014 and I add a PCIe ssd ( Trascend 820 ) with the flex cable, but when I turn on the mac and go to About this mac -> Storage the ssd does not appear. how can I do to install MacOS on the ssd if my mac does not recognise the drive?

any thoughts about what could be the problem?

Thank you!

The Transcend JetDrive 820 is a AHCI PCIe Gen3 x2 SSD not a JetDrive 850 which is a NVMe PCIe Gen3 x4

JetFlash is preformatted with MBR. So use Disk Utility to erase and format the device with GPT (GUID Partition Table). Carbon Copy Cloner works great for cloning. Also fixes the recovery partition. Or can clone for free with unix tools.

BlackMagic Disk Speed Test says write up to 620MB/sec; write about 720MB/sec.

I really don't recommend using cloning software! Check to see of your system is able to gain access to the recovery partition, if not you'll want to backup your drive and reformat, install a fresh OS and then use the Apple supplied Migration assistant to restore your user accounts, apps & data back on.

This also removed the buildup of un-needed configuration files of old apps you've long since deleted.

Newer macOS's have also had problems in upgrading as well with cloned drives.

Carbon Copy cloner is just a gui for unix tools. It is well thought out and highly reliable and saves truckloads of time. Windows users are used to doing fresh os installs. Mac users dont have to.

Your Mac Mini only supports a PCIe 2.0 x2 SSD's I haven’t put the Transcend into a Mac Mini. While Transcend does state it will work I would contact them to make sure.

I would check the cable connection making sure it’s not damaged.

Doesn't he have to initialize the PCIe with Disk Utility?

Yes! The drive does need to be setup at some point. The drive still should be seen within the hardware profile which then shows up under the About This Mac > Drive listing.

Transcend website says macOS High Sierra 10.13 is required.

My Mac Mini late 2014 running Yosemite 10.10 recognizes the drive as Apple 128 GB SSD and can be formatted at that capacity.

So the drive that recognized as Apple 128GB was one that an unscrupulous buyer had returned for a refund with Transcend stickers in the Transcend box. The proper Transcend drive works fine on my Mac mini late 2014 A1347 with 10.13 High Sierra. Use the Transcend utility "JetFlash Toolbox". TRIM looks to work fine so far. I have 480GB Transcend JetFlash 820.

Thats a bummer! Someone cheating Transcend and you got holding the bag. Happy Transcend did you right!
