Has anyone tried to replace the USB-C port?

Besides outsourcing, has anyone fixed their own USB-C port?

If so, could you breakdown what equipment is needed?

Yes, I've fixed lots of them (I own a repair business). I use a hot air station and some hand tools. Unfortunately, it's impossible to hand solder them. Here's my video about it:

Nice video, couple of follow-up questions.

What temp do you keep your hot air steady at?

And besides the physical damage to the port how do you distinguish between a faulty USB-C port vs the bq24193 being at fault when there are issues with charging?

I don't have a shop, just trying to see if it's feasible to do it myself without buying a ton of extra equipment.

If you dont have any or much experience with micro soldering i would not recommend trying this yourself. Most likely you will end up damaging the board and making it unrepeatable all together.

door

@eric My temp is at 1100 but it all depends on your setup. It's very easy to melt the plastic in the port so you have to be super careful.

If the port is not damaged the it's probably the chip but I don't know of a good way to test for sure. Keep in mind too that if the port is bad that can also cause the chip to go bad.

I'm all fo DIY repairs but honestly this is one that I wouldn't recommend anyone try unless they have a lot of microsoldering experience.

door

Yeah that's what I'm trying to eliminate, if I replace the port and the bq24193 is also messed up then that would not be fun.

If I put a fully charged battery inside this unit, it does boot up but goes into a bootloop with the Switch logo, so it seems like a compound issue and not just the port. Or maybe once the port is fixed and it gets a full charge maybe it will come back to life.

I live in a country where getting these things fixed by a pro isn't really worth it otherwise I would have already sent it in, I got this switch second hand knowing it had issues for pretty cheap so I can afford to experiment with it.

I have a hot air device that does 650c and a high quality microscope so I might give the USB port a go, I will update this post in the case I burn down the house or manage to fix it. Thanks for all the comments, I appreciate it.

door

That should be plenty hot enough. You may not want to go as hot as I do...it's a thick motherboard and can easily bubble. If you can replace the port you can replace the chip. Just takes flux and heat. It has a heat sink on the bottom so it will be soldered on all the sides as well as the bottom of the chip.

Good luck and keep me updated. Please don't burn down your house!

For those curious about price: I just sent my Switch in to Nintendo for repair for this issue, estimate is $100 USD.

How much would it cost to replace this part at a shop? Also, where can I find this part if I wanted to replace it myself?

If you would like to attempt this yourself, you can get replacement connectors on ebay, or de-solder one from a sacrificial device, though it would require special tools and a lot of skill to do so

How much would the repair cost if I sent my console to you

it is to much work why don’t they make a devise that you put in there that bends the charge back into place and fixes the charge, i just can’t risk messing up my switch for taking it apart and back together but really i do appreciate you doing this for all of us and trying to fix our problem

They dont make a device that does that, because it wouldn't work. The port needs to be replaced, and solder joints dont come good again just by pushing them down.

Unless you have microsoldering equipment, (at the very least microscope and rework station) do not attempt this repair

What is the port and price and where to get it?

You can't wire a lead, it needs to go to the motherboard, that will control the charging of the battery. You can fix it yourself but the equipment will cost you at least 80 if you buy the cheap stuff from amazon, If you don't have the experience you can ruin it and will have to fork out for a new one. You can always sell it as spares on ebay and pay the difference for a new one

On this topic I was replacing a charging port and my kids came running in the room and bumped me, I have now lost a micro capacitor from the back of the board. Does anyone know what one I need . It’s on the back of the board second line up from the usb c port. There are a line of them in pairs of 2, 8 in total. I pulled this image from the net but it’s basically the line that runs on the outside and top of the red circle not inside it.
