True Tone and Autobrightness not working after LCM repair.

OK folks. I asked a similar question and received the usual, "you did not do it right" responses. Here is the issue. When you replace the LCM on an iPhone 8, you lose the True Tone and auto-brightness features. Anyone else know about this or how to fix it?

iOS 12 solves this problem for the ALS (Ambient Light Sensor) auto-brightness (and probably true-tone as well) not working.

iOS 11 is currently the latest public release so there is no fix for it software wise yet as iOS 12 is currently in beta.

What causes this is that the little display chip on the screen is paired to the logic board via ID. Each screen has a different ID and if that does not match the ALS / True tone will not work.

So what would need to be done is the display chip information must be copied from the original screen onto the replacement screen (original or aftermarket doesn't matter) then it will work fine.

Here is a link to what the product looks like:

I wouldn't buy it myself as it's like a one-off thing.

What if iOS 12 did not fix this? I replaced my screen today with iOS 12 installed, turned the phone on when I was done and no auto brightness and no True Tone.

iOS 12 solved the auto brightness but the True Tone not.

door

I can confirm that.

After LCM repair, with iOS 12 auto brightness is working, True Tone is not

I paid 40$ for the device but it didn’t work. Not on iPhone X nor on iPhone 8 , no matter how hard I tried

Hello Shawn,

It is very likely that the part you installed includes an aftermarket LCD, meaning the display element is from a different factory than your original display. Aftermarkets will typically have different color characteristics than the original. Inexpensive aftermarkets will never be very close. Some very expensive aftermarket parts are nearly identical to the original screen. Unfortunately only the Apple Store part, calibrated by Apple's own equipment will be 100% accurate.

As to the brightness issue, your ambient light sensor may be misaligned or the glass in front of the sensor be too transparent or too opaque. I recommend taking out the new screen assembly and comparing the old and new parts. The "hole" in front of sensor needs to match. If the glass color does not match, how you adjust the shading will be up to your own level of creativity. Adding successive layers of transperant tape to the glass may be a good start.

Nope. I am not using an aftermarket part. I am using 2 OEM phones and just swapping out the camera flex assembly. The autobrightness and true tone features are disabled after this exchange. Just like the home button, this part is not tied to the original Phone. It is also tied to the LCM assembly. So if you fix a LCM on an iPhone 8, these features will no longer work.

I believe that with the latest iOS 11 updates it is no longer possible to replace the screen, as auto-brightness and true tone will be disabled. I also heard that face-ID sometimes gets disabled.

Nice try but that didn’t work for me.

BTW, FYI, “iTunes download mode“ is called DFU mode and on this model it’s a real pain in the neck to constrain the device into it..

Having said that, perhaps somebody else might get lucky.

I wasn’t

Without transferring the Cam/Speaker/sensor flex it will not work/ will not restore TrueTone. As per my knowledge, you need to copy the display data as well as transfer the sensor cable. There is currently no other way. Never heard that just copying the display data worked with another (even OEM) sensor flex cable and that this restored True Tone.

You must transfer eeprom off original screen from the phone to replacement screen which accepts the data. After market with copied IC will not take that data.

there is eeprom program for this specific job.

door

I purchased the eprom programmer from REWA but it didn’t work, not to mention iPhone XR. Waste of money and time

programmer did not work for me

@Captain Marcelo for True Tone to work, original front camera / ambient sensor must not be changed. If you replaced that, true tone gone. but I can still make it happen. Not cheap but I can.

door

@King Arthur Either you didn't get right value and entered wrong number. as long as face ID is working and your have display that you can program eeprom, true tone works 100%. You can pm me if you want thru ifixsmartphone.com

when You replace your screen you WILL lose the True Tone feature, it doesn’t matter if you use an Apple original display as a replacement… the original screen is the only screen with True Tone. I don’t know why your auto brightness doesn’t work, it should. Maybe you used a replacement camera assembly? I have a replacement oem Apple screen installed on my iPhone 8 and I do not have True Tone :(

If you copy eeprom from original to the other original or OEM screen which accepts eeprom, you will have true tone. I’ve replaced many screens keeping true tone already using this method.

door

if you still have that broken screen, send it over with replacement screen and I can program it for you.

door

Yea I just found out about the True Tone copy machines.. this is an old comment

You need eprom programmer like this one. https://www.rewatechnology.com/alsambien...

door

Exactly, you can get this device via ALI Express. You need to copy the old data from the broken display AND transfer the Cam/Speaker/sensor flex, otherwise it will not work.

There are two ways to really do this.

You can either pay apple $600 to fix it.

Or let’s say you are starting a repair company for iPhones.

Then you could buy something like JC1000s or similar

and use an application such as 3uTools to find the original screen’s serial number.

Then you can burn it to your new screen with the JC

I changed my ear speaker flex cable on my XS. I didn’t change my screen as it is still in new condition. The ear speaker cable was causing the “boot loop” mode, specifically the Illuminator sensor. New cable allowed the phone to power on however no True Tone or auto brightness now. Face ID obviously doesn’t work but that is already known. So copying the screen code won’t work because this is the screen that came from my phone originally. Seems like the new cable isn’t paired with the ambient light sensor either.

If you replaced whole cable, you lose true tone as well as face ID even though you copy eeprom value. In order to save true tone, you have to save the ambient sensor and transfer it .
