The Early 2009 Mac Pro—also known as the Mac Pro 4,1—introduced Intel's Nehalem architecture to Apple's line of professional desktop computers in March 2009. The Mac Pro 5,1 used the same interior design but received further CPU updates in 2010 and 2012.

2009 updating to High Sierra

Hello, I'm considering upgrade of my 4,1 Mac Pro (upgraded and flashed to 5.1) but I'm not sure if my GTX 970 will be still working after upgrade. That is the only reason I didn't upgraded it yet.

I don't have an original GPU. What do you recommend doing in that situation?

Thanks in advance for any help

Hello Maciek,

I have the same Mac Pro, only with a GTX 1060. From what i saw, there are macOS Cuda drivers for macOS 10.13.x ( http://www.nvidia.com/object/macosx-cuda... ) and the drivers for the Quadro and Geforce GPU's ( http://www.nvidia.com/download/driverRes... ). So practically, yes you can install the new macOS High Sierra. The only problem is that when you upgrade it, I don't think that the GPU is going to work until you install the drivers, so it's "safer" for you to do it with a stock GPU. It might work, but I'm not totally sure, because I never tried to do it.

Have you actually done this upgrade on your machine?

No, I have not.

Just an update. I have done the upgrade from Sierra to High Sierra and it work good. The only problem is that you need the old GPU to be able to fully update it, because you need to install the new drivers and to go through the initial setup after the upgrade.

Hi. You can pick up the default nvidia Gfx GT120 on ebay for super cheap these days. I keep one handy just in case I need to get to the pre-boot screen. There are better cards that support pre-boot and even Metal, but this one is super handy for slapping in when I just need video to boot because of some other issue. Even Mojave will boot with this graphics card provided you installed it with a metal supported one at the time.

Not a full answer but a tip for sure.
