Looking for a 2 TB SSD Upgrade!

I currently have the MacBook Pro Retina 15" mid 2015 with a 1 TB SSD (upgraded)

I keep reading everywhere, including @OWC that it's only upgradeable to 1 TB. I already have that, I need more storage!

They did however tell me that the machine is capable of being upgraded. Does anyone know of a compatible 2 TB SSD??

Not sure if this is relevant for yourself anymore, but OWC has a 2TB upgrade for your Mac available now. You can get it here: OWC - Aura Pro X 2 TB SSD

I have the same MacBook Pro and I spent a lot of money on it. Just the storage is what I need upgraded. Hopefully this helps!

Good find Dan! Only rub very expensive!

I jumped to the Samsung T5 external SSD while not as fast as the internal, for $700 US it's a bargain for a 2 TB drive!

Looks like something new has been added. Good find!

Finally! Thanks for the letting me know, Daniel. :)

Just checked out the drive. Definitely not cheap, but nowhere near the $4k I would have to spend on a brand new MacBook Pro. :)

As this question was answered a couple years ago I was wondering again if I need to spend the xtra money for OWC or is there another option in a mid 2015 MacBook Pro 15” 2.8ghz . I was looking for a SSD of 2tb . As this is one of the last great MacBooks, I want to push it to the limit now Shame I can’t bump up the memory

I have never heard of a 2 TB SSD blade upgrade for a MBP.

You could add an SD card for more storage.

UPDATE 5/18/19

Looks like OWC now offers upgrade paths.

Correct! @mayer - It was never offered by Apple. I think OWC teased us when they intro'ed their drive solution, but it never happened. Besides it would be quite expensive!

door

Not as expensive at the new MBP with 2Tb. $4K!

door

The newest 15" MacBook Pro Touch Bar offers a special build version with 2 TB but you'll pay the additional cost of $1,200 US for it! This is also a soldered down SSD!

To put that into perspective the Samsung PCIe M.2 SSD would cost you around $1,300 US. Sadly, Apple uses a custom interface so it won't work in your system

So if you really need this much internal storage you would be better off buying a new system.

We still use the older non-retina systems for this exact reason. Our base system in the field is a 1TB drive (SSHD and now SSD) and some now have 2 TB SSD's. When the retina models first came out storage was way to small for us.

What about a normal m.2 ssd in a m.2 to usb adapter?

door

@cam2363 Those adaptations are just not reliable as of yet.

Many persons report (macrumor forum) that they could add a M.2 SSD with an adapter and it seems it work, especially with the mbp 2015. Depending on the adapter, the ssd type and brand it could have issues. High Sierra recommended for this upgrade. I personally think to make this upgrade too.

I've used Sintech with Samsung 970 Pro 1TB. See here

Please confirm if this PCIe SSD would work with my 2015 system

Debra, I have mine upgraded to Samsung 2TB SSD. Here is the Part- for MBP 15inch Mid 2015 you can upgrade to 2TB Samsung 970 EVO 2TB - NVMe PCIe M.2 2280 SSD (MZ-V7E2T0BW) with Sintech NGFF M.2 nVME SSD Adapter Card for Upgrade 2013-2015 Year Macs (wont fit Early 2013 MacBook Pro) from Amazon with the latest Mojave 10.14.6

Hello, since a couple of years I use a MBP 2015 with a sinthech adapter and a 2TB samsung blade. Wonderful and faster than the original blade (only startup take, for me, just a little more time). All work very fine.

I waited for the new MBP in 2017 but when I have see the ssd was soldered I buied the 2015: I agree, its a great model!

More detail to upgrade with sintech adapter look here:

https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/upg...

(title speek about 2013-2014 models but the forum present the 2015 model too). You need to take care about some facts (firmware, adapter model, blade) and here you will find all and more.

Have a nice upgrade!

APPLE: WE WILL UPGRADABLE MACBOOK PRO AGAIN!!!!

To add to this thread. I installed a 2TB Samsung 870 EVO Plus with the sintech adapter in a mid-2014 rMBP and the processor would heat up frequently to 99c even under light load. After reinstalling the original SSD, it all went back to normal. Maybe worth checking out the OWC 2TB blade and see if i experience the same issue. Can confirm this sintech adapter works with Mojave, Catalina and Big Sur in a mid-2014 rMBP 15in.

Does anyone know whether the 2TB APSF APPLE SSD SM2048L will work with the MBP 15 inch mid-2015? I’ve read where others have successfully used this to upgrade their mid-2015 MBP without any of the known (booting) issues with other 2TB upgrades or need to upgrade to High Sierra before install/use. I’m running El Capitan and not in a position to upgrade (can’t afford all the software upgrades it would require and want to avoid SAAS options).

More importantly… where to locate/purchase a 2TB APSF APPLE SSD SM2048L. Seems iFixIt does not have any.

I have a 2.8MHz, 11,5 with dual graphics and an original 1TB blade.
