Black screen but backlights on

Hello,

I have my friends iPod. He said the home button was stuck down and it would show the Apple logo when connected to iTunes. I fixed the home button easily, the plastic piece just broke. But, I charged it, and tried to tun it on. The only response was a black screen that lit up. I've done hard reset, rebooting, etc. but it won't work. Still just stuck on black screen with backlights.

halp plz

Hey @gigabit87898. Have you tried DFU Mode? If you have tried all the software tricks for a device stuck on the startup logo, this could be related hardware or a bad Tristar. Sometimes we get thrown off by coincidental damage (the button) and it takes a while to realize the problem lay elsewhere.

I would try new battery, charge port, display (if you have one) after all the software tricks. If nothing, then it is probably a board problem. I have never seen an iPod schematic so I don't know if they exist. It is A5 based so probably similar to the iPhone 4S in concept at least.

I tried a different display and the same thing, black screen with backlight. The iPod connects to iTunes, it lights up when I hit buttons, etc. I can even put it into recovery. How do you put it in DFU? I can't remember...

How to would I get the data off of it first?

That's why they pay us the big bucks...NOT!

Tough one for sure. If iTunes recognizes it, can you do a backup or does it require a password or "trust"? If the data is important, DFU is pretty much last resort. You could open it up and check the FPC connectors for the LCD & Digi to see if anything is amiss.

Look at this picture I added to my answer, you will note that Tristar is below the NAND. That's also a shotgun approach. Try probing for some shorts.

Hopefully, someone else has some ideas.
