I am intending to change the battery in my iPhone 5s myself, something I haven't tried before, but if it all goes well, I've been thinking about replacing the old, scratched case with a new one.
How hard is a case replacement, or am I likely to mess it up?

If you're not experienced, then it is very hard. You have to transfer all the internal parts, like antenna connectors, buttons, motherboard etc. If you do want to attempt it, I would recommend buying a back case that already includes the small parts, so you would only need to transfer the motherboard and screen.
