Is the backlight built into the screen?

Im replacing a cracked and water damaged screen. The touch screen occasionally works but is super glitchy. Also the tab on the back of my phone underneath the micro sd card slot and sim card slot has turned red. It still has sound and vibration and if i look close enough with the right lighting i can see the lock screen.
