I attempted to put a usb memory stick in the computer,it lit up brightly then the computer shut down and would not power up again. Now the power button will not release, seems stuck.

What happens when you insert the flash drive in another computer?

door

Flash drive is ok in another computer. I think it was just a coincidence that the issue with the power button happened at the same time as inserting the usb drive.

How about if I wanted to replace the power button? Is that a problem? I couldn't find that part listed.

I'd still try a PRAM reset though, you never know if this might happen again and brick your computer.

the usb drive, and the power button are most likely two completly different issues, the power button might be preventing the computer from turning on, you could try to clean the power button assembly, try pouring a little rubbing alcohol on it with the battery removed, and let it sit for a day ot two, that might clear anything stickey

There was nothing sticky on the button, so I didn't try the alcohol solution. Thanks for your input though.

I'd say remove extended memory, Airport, and battery to avoid complications, and then connect via AC power and see if you can reset the PMU by holding the power button in for 10 seconds. If that doesn't work, leave it sitting unplugged overnight and try again in the morning (letting the computer discharge with no power source including battery can sometimes clear up problems that cause it to not power on). I'd also try to verify that your AC adapter is good on another machine (and that both parts of it are firmly connected together). Also, when you plug in the AC, is the light on the AC adapter plug a steady color as it was while it was working, or does it flicker, etc.?

Generally power buttons don't go bad, and usually when a machine won't power on, the problem is something deeper, and the power button itself is just the messenger telling you the bad news. You can replace it, and 1 in 50 times you might find that that is the issue, but far more often than not it's going to be something else.

Thank you rdklincorp, the issue has been resolved. Removing the battery for a few minutes was all it took. Computer restarted as normal and all I had to do was reset the calendar and clock.
