Unable to Format SSD added into Optical Drive space

Hi. I bought the iFixit optical drive SSD holder and a 1TD SSD Hybrid 2.5" Drive, also from iFixit. The hard installs just fine and is recognized by the mac. However, we I try to format the drive via Disk Utility, I get an error that "Wiping the volume data to prevent future accidental probing failed."

Does anyone know why? Can anyone help with a work around. I want to keep both my original 750 GB and the new 1TB SSD installed internally. Is this an incompatible hardware or a software issue?

So it's looking like the new SSD did not like being in the optical drive bay. So I swapped the original HD into the optical bay and put the new SSD into the hard drive spot. This formatted correctly and I'm swapping the image over via Fisk Utility as I type. Thanks for the help.

Hold that thought! You'll want to rethink this.

You really need to leave the HD in its location and put the SSD in the optical drive carrier. As the HD SATA connection has crash guard protection were the optical drive doesn't.

Now the rub! You're hitting a known problem with this MBP series. Review the section in Red at the bottom of this doc: OWC Data Doubler. It makes no difference who's adapter you used as the issue is within the logic board.

Bottomline here the SSD is not able to run at SATA II (3.0 Gb/s) which is what this system needs. Auto sensing drives also won't work here. You need a fixed speed drive or one that you can force to SATA II. Sorry guy ;-{

I've hit this problem all to many a times. I would recommend you go with a SSHD drive if you can't find a SATA II SSD (they are getting very hard to find new).

I have never seen that error in all my years of working with Apple products. Was it a new drive? Are you trying to formate GUID, will it partition to one partition? What OS X are you using?

It's really weird. But when the OSX starts up it says it is unusable and gives me the option to validate it. Disk Utility can see the drive. But all all of the first aid options are greyed out. And it recognizes it is Unformatted. I can't partition it yet bc it's still Unformatted. I'm on OS 10.10.5

It was a brand new drive from ifixit that was "compatible" for what I was trying to do. I was trying to format Mac OS extended journaled.

It has to be formatted GUID first. Do a partition and give it one, then do the Mac OS X extended.

Use a OS X Installer bootable USB Thumb Drive to do this. Once booted to the USB use Disk Utility there.

Hi,

Unfortunately more of the same here. My situation is:

  • MBP Mid-2009
  • replaced busted HDD with a compatible one for that model ( hitachi travelstar 7k1000 1tb 2.5" sata 600 7200rpm)
  • made a bootable USB with Yosemite, since Sierra does not work on this old model
  • runned the USB and got till disk utility. I can see the new hdd, but no vulume. Its says it is unformatted.
  • tried to make a simple partition but it gives that "Partition fail with an error: wiping volume data to prevent future accidental probing failed.

I also pulled out the new HDD and put it on a SATA case, and connected it to another MBP to partition it there. But the new hdd disk wouuld not mount, or was findable at DU.

Any help would be much appreciated!
