Second hand iPod nano restore failed

I have a 2nd hand iPod nano 6th generation. I tried to restore it and synch with iTunes and this error message comes up: The iPod software update server could not be contacted. The server does not support this version of iTunes.

I have the most recent version of iTunes installed. What's the problem?
