Only non-Apple charger works. Replace magSafe?

I live on a boat where all electricity is 12V so I bought a non-Apple car adapter on eBay to charge when I'm off the grid.

After 2 years, there was a period of few weeks when the charger would not charge but keep the Macbook on. After a week I went to work where I noticed that my original Apple charger would also not charge the Mac.

Resetting the SMC and switching off and on the car-(boat) adapter fixed the problem off grid, but charging with Apple chargers still fails (tried multiple).

So again, Macbook charges now on a car-adaptor non-Apple charger but does nothing on the grid on an Apple charger.

Any suggestions? Do I need to replace magSafe board?

(apart from carrying boat battery and solar panel with me)

Replace battery?

On charge and on battery I get the "replace soon" notification. Maybe Apple charger already considers it dead, while non-apple still pushes in the Amps?

Check the systems MagSafe connector, is the insulator block melted or the contacts corroded?

I would also do the same of the cable ends of both charger cords (boat & Apple), then with no AC/DC power see if the pins compress a bit when pressed.

Thanks Dan. I can't see any corrosion or melt from the outside. Cleaned the connections again, but same. I cannot open yet, due to having no correct screwdrivers.

Could that be that it's a battery issue? On charge and on battery I get the "replace soon" notification. Maybe Apple charger already considers it dead, while non-apple still pushes in the Amps?

The battery lasts around 1.5 hours - bought it used 4 years ago, then it did 2, so the difference would not suggest that its totally trash, but I read online that it should do at least 6-7, so maybe I should've replaced back 4 years ago.

Thanks

ps, yes the pins on chargers do compress. the chargers definitely work, tested with another mac

As you are getting the replace battery warning I suspect that's a good direction in replacing the battery.

I would also recommend you download this gem of an App: CoconutBattery. It will give you much more info on your batteries health.

thanks Dan,

Coconut says its not in that bad condition, so now I'm wondering if changing battery will solve the charging issue, although doubling its capacity may justify the replacement. http://tinypic.com/r/2excabs/9

Nope! Battery has over 1000 cycles its time for a new battery.
