Does "using" an iPod while the 2 halves are separated hurt?

My ipod classic is in pieces right now, waiting for parts to arrive. Getting it open was difficult and I wanted to make sure I could do it before ordering parts.

I'm not sure what parts will fix it. I ordered a hard disk, but if that doesn't work, I'll try a logic board.

Here's the question: can I install the new hard disk, re-connect the two ribbon cables from the back panel and VERY CAREFULLY connect to my computer, synch it, run it, and see if it works before snapping it together? If it doesn't work, I'll try a logic board, but I'd hate to have to open it again!

Not going to say what you should do, but I did just that some days ago without any additional trouble. Didn't see any reasons for it to be able to cause damage as long as it's done with care.

No reason why you can't, really. I might suggest putting it on an anti-static mat if you have one, though. If you don't have one, just be extremely careful not to short out any circuits with your fingers or tools. Work somewhere with a hard floor if possible (walking across carpet will build up static electricity that could short the board). I have spent a good amount of time working with half-disassembled Wii consoles plugging them in and running them.

We plug those in and run them while they are opened up with the guts hanging out and they work fine. Should not be a problem for you.
