My Vacuum Cleaner Turns Off After Few Minutes. What Should I Do?

Hey guys,

Ever since I vacuumed my red Persian carpet, last week, the vaccum cleaner started working poorly and after a few days, it started turning off after just a few minutes of use.

I opened the panel and replaced the bag and cleaned all the filters. Unfortunately, with no success at all. The machine appeared to work normal the first couple of times I tested it, but then it completely stopped and never turned on again. I read on the forums that I should unplug it and turn it off for an hour or two and then try it out in a different socket. Again, it didn't work.

Has my vaccum cleaner completely gone? Should I be worries or is there a way to fix it?

I'm not an expert in repair nor do I understand electronics, but wanted some opinion on what could the problem possibly be so I can prepare myself for any additional repair costs or just go to the store and by a new one.

Make sure you include references or pics, if possible, so I can get familiar with the issue you'd be referring to.

Take care and thank you all for the help!

Hi @tash88 ,

Were you using it for a while before it shut off or only a minute or so?

If using it for a while, is it/was it feeling hot to the touch around the motor area?

If it is allow it to cool down before trying it again.

Most wall powered vacuum cleaners have an internal safety switch that turns off the power to the motor when it gets too hot due to airflow restriction, to protect the motor (and to prevent any potential fires)

Have you checked that the filter is clean and not clogged up? Is the dust canister also reasonably empty or at least not full to overflowing ;-).

My power tool won't come on. I've put in a new bag and the machine comes on but not the power tool. What else can I do?

Cause 1

On - Off Switch

To determine if the switch is defective, use a multimeter to test it for continuity. If the on-off switch does not have continuity, replace it.

Cause 2

Drive Motor

First, test the power switch for continuity to ensure that the motor is getting power. If the power switch has continuity, ensure that the blower wheel turns freely and is clear of obstructions. If power is getting to the motor, and the motor turns freely, but the motor still won’t run, replace the motor.

Cause 3

Fan Motor

First, test the power switch for continuity to ensure that the motor is getting power. If the power switch has continuity, ensure that the blower wheel turns freely and is clear of obstructions. If power is getting to the motor, and the motor turns freely, but the motor still won’t run, replace the fan motor.

I have the same problem vacuum turns off after few minutes, switch is new ,I cleaned out the filter thoroughly and the bag too but all in vain, kindly suggest what I do.

I have the same problem with a 5 year old machine. I get it, probably shutting off due to motor getting hot. but when my wife went out and bought a new machine and plugged it into the same outlet, the same thing happened. Vacuum shut off, let it rest and then try again and it works for a short time. why would this happen to a new machine?

Here's a simple explanation that i've found that helps me fix it.

The vacuum motor shutting down usually is an indication that there is a partial air blockage in the tubing that the dirt travels through. The air that the vacuum cleaner picks up has to travel through the vacuum and the dirt stops at the filter and the air continue on through the motor to keep it cool. If there is a restriction the motor will over heat and shut down on thermal over load and has to cool and reset before the motor will start up again.

Please make sure all the filters are clean and the dirt and air that travels in the tubing is clean and has not blockages.

If you have to replace the motor it will come with some of the plastic housings that surround it.

Take the dirt cup out of the vacuum and turn it on to see if the motor will run for more than five minutes.

Do no vacuum with the cup removed just let it run if it will.

Hope it helps! cheers!

So, if we analyse this:

Machine turns off soon after starting?

These issues are usually a faulty switch. Whilst it is true that there can be a variety of reasons, the only way to know for sure is to have an electrician test it. However, I have had similar problems and they are usually to do with the switch not working

The motor is overheating because either the cooling air flow is inadequate, or the motor is working harder than it is designed to handle. Both of these are usually caused by restricted airflow through the main path of the machine or stuff binding up moving parts. .

I suggest start with the debris collection area. Is there a replaceable bag? Replace it as well as any primary and secondary filters. Straighten any hoses and check visually for clogs, or run a broom handle up the hose.

Disassemble the power nozzle and remove hair and threads from the moving parts and bearings.

If the cause is still not obvious, disassemble the main unit down to the vacuum motor. Again check for debris, dust, threads and hair that may have found their way into the moving parts and bearings and belts making things hard to turn.

A vacuum cleaner is a pretty simple device, it can usually be disassembled pretty easily, search YouTube for clues to your model.

So I had the same problem, charging all day then running for 10 seconds and turning off.

Cleaned everything then realised you can remove the roller. I removed so much hair from around the edges of the roller, which must have been stopping the vacuum from moving.

Gross, but it was the issue, and it was up and running like new in 5 mins

I have a Ergorapido stick with a similar problem. At first it would start and run for about 15 seconds and slowly die. Figured the batteries were old. I replace them and now the unit (just the hand-held portion, unattached from the stick) will turn on run full power for three seconds and then shut off. Battery voltage is not drained. No obstruction at the filter or intake. If it's the on/off microswitch, I'd expect it to be random and sometimes stay on for a longer amount of time, but I I can keep turning it on and it will run like it wants to pick up a car, then off. No burnt or discolored markings on the board. Also, just to be clear, if the in-line barrel fuse was blown, it would not run at all, correct?

My Hoover WindTunnel 2 will run for about 5 minutes then shut off. I cleaned the hoses. The filters took the debris from around the wheels and it still does the same thing. What do I do?
