insulation on wires is falling off Guitar Hero Drums

On my Guitar Hero drums, how can I replace the wire from the drums to the foot pedal? The insulation is cracked and falling off.

Not a believer in throwing $ at the problem, unless it is the only option. Subsequently contacted Activision to see what they have to say. Will try the headphone cable solution too. Thanks for the follow-up.

Of course it's always easier to throw money at the situation; buy a new thing when it breaks and throw the old one away, but that's not what this website is about.

If I recall correctly, that cable is just a headphone cable. You should be able to buy a cheap pair of headphones with a long enough cable, cut the headphones off and solder them to the appropriate points on the sensor.

Of course, after you repair the first pedal, you could buy a second foot pedal and a cheap headphone splitter, and rock both pedals at the same time as a double bass.

The easiest thing to do is just replace the foot pedal. It would run you $20.00 - $40.00 to replace it OR you can repair it but you'd have to buy the same type of wiring and solder onto the sensor underneath the pedal.

Thanks, new foot pedal sounds like the easiest solution.

I didn't give this enough of a look before. Your Answers should tell people how to fix their devices, not tell them that it's more economical to buy a new one. Our mission is to reduce e-waste, not because it's the cheapest route, but because it's the right thing to do.

Ok well you would be buying a new headset, you are still throwing money towards the project and not eliminating waste because what good would headphones be with no cable? Nice ear muffs I guess? If you're going to spend money on it, why not just get the part that is needed instead of taking a chance of not even fixing it in the first place?

If you want to eliminate E-WASTE, recycle is the number one solution. Maybe the site should be focused a bit on recycling too. 50% of the stuff we get in for repair is failed repair attempts. We are only able to reach so many people and the people we don't reach throw the consoles away in the trash. Why not make up a way to recycle?

+ Please post this to www.ifixit.com/meta

Sounds like something they might want to look into

Reduce first, then re-use, then recycle.

I did it for free - simply removed the insulation sire, you'll need some fairy as it is a bit sticky underneath. Obviously the wire is less protected but if it gets damage there is always that old set of 'unused' headphones in the loft. Enjoy!
