xbox disc not recognized at start and sometimes mid game

we were given an XBOX consoles and dozens of games. Often the discs arent recognized by the machine, and at other times they are. Its random and frustrating. sometimes the machine rejects the discs as unrecognizable mid game!

what do you think the problem is? how should I try and fix it?
