My HP 5514 is not printing in black ink.

My HP Photosmart 5514 was purchased 3 years ago. It recently printed blank pages. After I ran the printer diagnostics and changed the ink cartridges, it prints with the color cartridges and not the black.

I have read other problems similar to mine, after 3 years the printer fails. I am wondering if this is a manufacturers defect.
