Why will my itunes will not recognize iPod

My itunes crashed mid restore and now my mac will only see the device as a HDD not as a ipod. itunes will not even recognize that I plugged in the device even though my ipod is connected. I have tried updating itunes, but I am still running OSX (10.6.8 Snow leopard). I went to use disk utility to repair the device but it fails every time before I can even see the HDD's list (When I remove the ipod Disk Utility will work no problem). I have also hooked up device to a windows machine running windows seven itunes up to date ect. ( long shot since it is Mac OS Extended (Journaled). if there is anything anyone can think of that might help me out I would greatly appreciate it and thanks in advance to anyone willing it give input.

I also have a Ubuntu machine I have not given it a shot but if someone could recommend a program or process to fix my device.
