stopped cooling and freezing. inside lights working.

jenn air refrigerator side by side model JCD2389GEB is about 12 years old and at a vacant house I have out of state. Last trip over, I discovered that the unit no longer cools or freezes. Inside lights work. I unplugged, hoping to "restart" but nothing changed. Can feel very slight movement of air flow when putting my hand right on the flow vents inside and the temperature is only ambient. No unusual noises. I heard very little sound when unit was plugged back in but do not recall how much sound it normally makes. Did not hear sounds of any motors starting up. Do not know life expectancy of this unit (I inherited it) and have no history of possible past issues.

Start Relay

If the refrigerator is not cold enough, the start relay may be defective. The start relay is a small device mounted to the side of the compressor. It provides power to the run winding along with the start winding for a split second at start-up to help get the compressor started. If the start relay is defective the compressor may run intermittently or not at all and the refrigerator will not get cold enough. The start relay should be replaced if defective.

1. dirty condenser – clean the condenser coils and fan

2. temperature setting turned to low – turn temperature setting to colder

3. circuit breaker tripped – power spike – reset circuit breaker

4. compressor won’t start – failed capacitor – replace capacitor

5. defrost timer malfunction – replace defrost timer or computer control board

6. failed door seal – replace worn out door seal

7. failed compressor – replace compressor
