I used my 4th gen in my 3rd gen dock for a long time. now the connector seems to be damaged as charging and synchronizing does not work properly. how can i fix it?

you wrote that it does not charge/sync properly - does it connect at all?
the dock connector is soldered to the logic board - so there is no easy way to replace it.
sometimes are the contacts bent or corroded - look inside the connector, maybe you see something "odd"
if they are corroded or dust/dirt is inside - use isopropyl alcohol and a paintbrush to clean it, if they are bent - well, lets talk about that after you checked it

i have a similar problem with my nano 2nd gen. It was stepped on while in a dock and i think that the two small nubs next to the dock chip are bent but i'm not sure if they're supposed to be straight anyways. It now doesn't register at all when plugged into usb and doesn't register in dock unless there's a sock behind it bending it into place.

i would say that one or more contacts of the connector are broken. check this picture - the contacts are pretty small and can break - bending makes even worse! the only way is to resolder the connector
hi, i had the thing layin around for some time and tried alcohol with little effect. is it possible to bend it back, perhaps after carefully heating it?
