Can a bad PRAM battery keep a MacBook from turning on?

The subject is a 2006 Macbook that wasn't used in over a year. Doesn't respond in any way to the power button. Battery appears to charge correctly (and battery indicator on the back says the battery is charged). I first tried to reseat the ram and harddrive. I then removed the top and tried to jumpstart the machine using the power pads on the logic board. No noise or movement of the fan at all.

At this point, I assume the logic board is dead. I'm not sure I'm willing to pay $200 for a new board for such an old computer. However. I'm wondering if the problem could just be the PRAM battery. Could a dead PRAM battery keep the computer from starting?

Is there another possibility that I've overlooked?

I'm sure the PRAM battery could keep the machine from booting. But shouldn't the computer do SOMETHING (like make the fan move) even if the PRAM is bad?

Is there a way to use a voltmeter to see if the logic board is getting power?

I'd try a SMC reset. Do you have a steady green light on the magsafe tip ?

I tried an SMC reset.

The magsafe light was amber for a while but eventually changed to a steady green.

Having similar problems. Mi e sometimes will boot, sometimes doesnt.

Ive done the pram and smc reset but it does no good.

The dvd will power up, and the light on the front comes on.

Sometimes the keyboard lights up, sometimes it doesnt.

I purchased a,new aftermarket main battery and it worked for a while. But now its just sporadic at booting.

So i dont know if its the pram, or if it needs a oem battery, or if possibly its just that the video chip has went out.

Oh, and it doesnt chime after the dvd cycles on attempted boot, but the power light on tbe front (under the touch pad) does light up. And the fans run.

Any suggestions?

It's a bit of work but its worth the try. A fully dead PRAM battery can prevent your system from booting up.

Try taking the battery out, you should then get a different response then.
