During front glass removal chipped the layer underneath. What is it?

While removing cracked front glass I accidentally made a small chip in the next layer. When I turn on the phone I can still see the image displayed in the affected area, but it is much brighter since the layer removed seems to be tinted or darkened. What is it that I damaged and is it repairable?
