Broken the Rewind Button/Stick and corresponding piece inside

I have managed to break the Film Rewind 'stick' when trying to wind the film back when I finished a roll (I think it may have been cracked already from prior use).

Has anyone got any idea how to fix/replace it? I was planning on having a go at it tonight (seeing the small flathead screw there), but thought it best to seek advice first.

Will the camera still operate ok without it if I can't fix/replace it?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Please forgive the poor iPhone photo: Broken piece

Ouch!

That is the sprocket drive which advances the film. What may have happened the sprocket drive release button didn't get pushed when you tried to rewind the film or for some reason failed to disengage.

OK the bad news! This is a big job as you'll need to take almost the entire camera apart to get to the part and there are some fragile electronics wrapping around all of this as well.

Unless you have the skills to work on the delicate insides of a watch or camera I wouldn't tempt fate here. Best to get your camera to a Canon authorized service center for the repair. Sorry ;-{

Thanks very much for the response Dan - as the camera has sentimental value I reckon I'll take it to an authorised repair shop and just bite the bullet. Darn!
