Try resetting it as per Apple: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1320

The thing dave mentioned is pretty good - try to reset it!

  1. Toggle the Hold switch on and off. (Slide it to Hold, then turn it off again.)
  2. Press and hold the Menu and Center (Select) buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo appears, about 6 to 8 seconds. You may need to repeat this step.

the point is - does the iPod reset or not - if yes - then the menu button is not the problem

can you scroll trough the menu???

maybe the click wheel isn't damaged at all, sometimes it only dirt, but cleaning it is not easy - you have to disassemble the whole nano

use this guide - the needed tools are listed in the guide. the guide is normally for the display replacement - but the click wheel is right under the lcd - so i think that would work either ;-)

If resetting and restoring does not work for you then try this quick and dirty fix which worked for me. My 3rd gen 8GB nano iPod was not responding when I press the MENU button. All other buttons work fine including the scroll wheel. In the past I would have to press the MENU button really hard to get it to work and then even that stopped working. Well....here's the trick which worked for me:

While holding your thumb on the MENU button, place your index finger on the back of the iPod directly behind the MENU button. Now, press the MENU button with your thumb while also pressing on the back with your index finger. THIS WORKED FOR ME!!! :) and it saved me some $$$ because I was going to buy a new iPod but I really don't need it since I plug this into my car and navigate through songs via the car's interface anyway! I also read somewhere that you can pry open the bottom of the iPod and insert a thick piece of paper in the back or something similar to allow the "bonding" to take place when you press the button. However, I'm not going to attempt that as this works for me and I rarely use the MENU button but if all your buttons are dead you might want to try that.

Hope this helps someone!

The problem with ipods is that although the controls are "analog" the software that reacts to them is digital, so a faulty control can be due to a physical fault or a software/firmware problem.

If the reset does nothing, and itunes tells you the current software is up to date, the only thing you can do is to restore the ipod to default via itunes.

If it still has problems after this it isd a physical problem.

Buddy! Tried your method once and now it functions normally. I had originally spilled keg beer on it at a party and discontinued the menu button, this was ok however I just kept it on shuffle all the time. But then I put it through a soapy wash of laundry and without knowing dried it off at high heat for good measure, at this point I surely thought my nano was mega f**ked. But alas 6 months later I tried plugging it in to turn it on and it turns out the poor lil fella was just out of batteries, but stuck in disk mode, tried your method with the menu button.... worked like a charm. Surprisingly also all my data was still there and intact! THANKS AGAIN IGGY!

Thank you so much.

I was having the same problem with the menu button, but I wasn't ready to get a new Ipod yet (can't afford it actually) so I tried the trick with pressing the menu button and the back and it worked great!!!!

Sarah, this can be caused by multiple reasons -

Battery has expired.....ie swollen ,thus preventing menu button function.( batt. Is under top of click-ring)

Bad / damaged click ring ...did a bod stand on it?

If it does not move at all , and is in its original level position,ie not crushed!! Might need a new click ring.....find a geek nearby to do it ,its on utube mostly.....not too diff.

Daughter's iPod had the same"menu button not working" all other functions fine. Tried all the methods above and none worked. Believing it to be a dirty contact I gave it a quick blow through the connectors at the bottom and as if by magic all is now well!
