Installing Mac OS X 10.9.1 in a MacBook Pro 15" A1226 on a 320 GB 5400 RPM SATA Hard Drive (New). OS already purchased, how to install Mac OS 10.9.1 Mavericks on a new HD. This OS is only sold as an App download from Apple's App Store.

Use your original system installation DVD and format then install the system that came with it. Now you can access the Apps Store and download and install 10.9.2.
Otherwise you're going to need another Mac to create a 8 GB Flash drive installation, this is somewhat complicated.

I would have thought that Apple would have a more simple solution to install the already "purchased" (free) update to OS 10.9.1 Mavericks on any new computer, new HD, or even an older one.
They do. Buy a new machine or support their repair places. Simple. The problem is getting a 10.9 system that will install, so far as I have had luck it will only install off the internet, I haven't been able to get just a download. I took an old 60 GB SATA drive and gave it 7 partitions. I have now set up installations for 10.9.2, 10.8.5, 10.7.5 and 10.6.8 using the directions from the hongkiat link. No more fights to locate installation disks or downloads. I'll load further updates on the blank partitions.

After installing the new HD: First, you have to FORMAT the new HD, or it will never be seen as a TARGET for the OS to be installed on. Second, you have to install OS 10.6 or higher to be able to installed the FREE OS 10.9 (now 10.9.2). Last, you RESTORE from your Time Machine backup external HD. [It MAY be possible, after formatting the new HD, to just RESTORE from the Time Machine backup, but I didn't do that.]
