MacBook supposedly maxed at 1GB - can I really increase the ram?

My macbook (2 Mhz, late 2006) is painfully slow when running more than 1-2 apps. Can I use the PC2-5300 2 GB RAM Chip, as promoted on Ifixit, despite my supposed 1GB limit, and should I see significant speed improvement?

Do I buy one or two of these PC2-5300 2 GB RAM Chips? I have two slots (500mb each), so does that mean I can use 2 of these, for total of 4 GB Ram?

And how about the 500 GB SSD Hybrid 2.5" Hard Drive...would that make a major speed improvement, too?

While your system has 2 memory slots which are likely both loaded currently. Your system should be able to be upgraded to 4GB of RAM (two 2GB modules). Your system can only access 3.0GB of RAM but its' wise going with the 2GB module setup Vs a mix setup of one 1GB and one 2GB. Heres a link to your systems specs MacBook 2.0GHz Late '06.

Yes, it can improve performance up to a point, often the HD needs upgrading as well. I would recommend doing both.

I recommend going with a Seagate SSHD (hybrid HD) to gain the most for your system. In any case make sure the HD you get runs at SATA I (1.5Gb/s) speed which is the limit of your system

Lastly, don't forget to update your EFI firmware as well following this Apple TN EFI & SMC firmware updates for Intel-based Macs
