blank Excel and Word document on starting Macpro
On starting the laptop, it shows a blank Word and Excel document instead of the blank screen. How does one set what comes on the start up screen?

Check accounts-Login items, also System->Library->StartupItems and Library->StartupItems

OS X 10.7 (Lion) introduced a feature where it automatically restores any windows that were open on shutdown, as best as it can determine. If you still have Word and Excel running at shutdown (that is, you haven't closed them with cmd+q), they will start up again when you restart your computer and, I would guess, open a blank document.
