In need of Backlight Repair Information.

I have recently purchased a used iPod Touch 16gb 1st gen, and it was working great. Just recently without warning the Backlight on the screen is no longer lit. I have gone into the settings and disabled the auto backlight and raised the brightness to the max however I have no such luck.

I have tried a restore from Itunes and still came up with a dead end. I immediately thought it was the LCD and I had another 1st gen Touch that I was going to use the screen as a replacement. While using the Tear Down Guide for the site, when trying to unstick the battery from the glue the original screen magically lit up and was working fine until I reset the battery back on the board.

I tried several times to recreate it and was only able to do it twice before the battery completely unglued itself but still connected to the logic board. I also tried reseating the skinny black cable for the screen a few times and still no luck.

I decided to replace the LCD screen anyway with the older model that I had. I completed the installation and powered the unit back up however the same result. No backlight at all. I can see the icon under direct light but no lit screen.

Does anyone have any additional info about the BackLight? It is located in the LCD Screen? Any replacements or repair guides for the backlight alone? Any information regarding this will be very helpful. Thank you.

The backlight is integrated into the LCD, but the inverter circuitry that powers the backlight is on the main logic board. If you're hitting the same issue with a new LCD, I'd guess that your old screen was fine and you need a new board.

Kyle,

How do you explain the following if it is the inverter?

"when trying to unstick the battery from the glue the original screen magically lit up and was working fine until I reset the battery back on the board."

It may be a grounding issue.

I would try to replace the black cable that is under the battery. It could have a short in it which would explain why when you were unsticking the battery it worked.

Could be a short in the cable but I would suspect it is an intermittent connection in main board relating to the inverter circuit.
