No, you can't change the CPU chip as you can in the desktop systems as its soldered to the logic board Vs held in a socket.

It is possible to exchange out the full logic board with a different board as long as you are exchange it within the same series of system.

Frankly, the cost of the board and the amount of labor to do this is not worth the effort Vs buying a new system for such a small incremental speed bump when your system is working.

That’s not easy to change the CPU. Cause the CPU i5 is on your Motherboard defied. It’s possible but it is work based on experience.

@zizu77 - Consider the posting date: Nov 2012, Also look at the context of the question: 'What can I do to upgrade'. Now look at the design of this system and the needed tools to remove the current CPU chip and what chip could be used by reviewing the systems schematics. Sadly the answer is just not possible. The i7 board is different from the i5 board, and the CPU is just not available in single quantity from Intel any more and you are limited to what this series offered.

For all of the effort and costs it would be cheaper just upgrading the logic board with the upper version of the series. Going with anything newer is just not possible as Apple altered the systems design enough the board will not work.
