Loss of video display
During hard boot, video has horizontal noise lines and then goes black. Could the Inverter card be involved?

Take the back cover off the machine and examine the 24 cans (capacitors) for swelling and/or corrosion. This does not sound like an inverter issue.

Sure enough, 6 of the cans are swollen and corroded. I have since learned that this iMac suffered a power surge from a nearby lightning strike in the neighborhood.
