Computer Screen Will Not Turn On
The laptop will not display anything on the screen while powered on.
Excessive static electricity in computer
Disconnect all external connections including power and then depress the power button for at least 10 seconds. If the battery can be removed, remove the battery. If the battery cannot be removed, proceed with the rest of the steps regardless. Depress and hold the power button again for 10 seconds, then reinstall the battery if it was removed. If the battery was not removed, proceed to next step regardless. Next, plug in only the charger to the charging receptacle, and then depress the power button once to turn the machine on. If it still does not work, then you likely need a new LCD screen.
Faulty LCD Screen
First, verify that the caps lock button turns the caps lock light on when the laptop is powered. If it does not light up, then there is likely a Power-On Self Test issue and the screen replacement will not fix this issue. If this is the case, do not proceed with screen replacement. With the laptop powered up, plug an HDMI cord into the HDMI port and connect the opposite end of the HDMI cord to an external monitor. If the monitor works, then the LCD screen must be replaced. If the monitor does not work, then verify the laptop is powered on. If the laptop is powered on, and the external monitor does not work, there is a Power-On Self Test issue and you should not proceed with screen replacement. Ensure the laptop is fully powered down before proceeding. Next, use a knife or thin metal object to pry the plastic screen cover off by inserting the knife along the top edge and running it around the edge of the screen. Remove the cover. Remove 4 small Phillips head screws holding the LCD in place and then pop the screen out and remove it from the electrical connector located at the base of the screen by gently pulling it off. Attach replacement screen’s connector to the electrical connector on the laptop and pop screen into place. Re-install 4 Philips head screws and then replace plastic screen cover by snapping it back on around all edges. Finally, power on and ensure the screen operates.
Computer is not responding to function key inputs
The function keys will not apply their designated function such as adjust volume or screen brightness, even when using the FN key.
Missing ACPI Drivers
The most common cause for the computer not responding to function key inputs is a missing driver. Download and install the ACPI drivers via the Lenovo website, which can be found here: https://pcsupport.lenovo.com.
BIOS Misconfiguration
Another common cause is that the BIOS is misconfigured. Adjust the BIOS settings to enable the Hotkey Mode. This can be found under the Configuration Tab.
Windows Not in UEFI Mode
Another common fix for function key issues is to reinstall Windows in UEFI mode.
Touchpad not working
Your touchpad does not respond when you touch it.
Enable or disable touchpad
There is a possibility that you or someone else could have accidentally disabled the Lenovo laptop touchpad, and thus the touchpad is not working. On the home screen open the Control Panel. Under Control Panel, find and open the Mouse properties. On the Mouse Properties window, select the last tab. (might say touchpad configuration and varies with models.) Then you should find the switch to enable your touchpad. (checkbox or button)
Some drivers are wrongly installed or outdated
There are some cases where the Lenovo touchpad issue results from faulty drivers. In this instant, you would need to update or reinstall the touchpad driver to fix the problem. Most of the makers have updated their drivers, but in some cases, drivers still need to be updated. There are two methods for updating the drivers.
Method 1 is updating Outdated Drivers in Windows 10 through Device Manager. Press Windows + X altogether to open the Windows Tools menu, and select Device Manager from the menu. A list of your hardware will appear in Device Manager. Expand one of the categories to find the name of your hardware device, and then right-click on it. Then select Update driver software and from there then select Search automatically for updated driver software. Windows will install the available driver updates and then proceed to update your Lenovo.
Method 2 is if you are not a technical person but just a computer novice, it’s recommended to use a professional and reliable driver update utility tool, such as Driver Talent, remarked as the safest and fastest way to update drivers, which could find out all your outdated drivers in seconds and then automatically update them to the most updated version in minutes for your Windows 10 PC.
Screen shuts off when unplugged from wall
Computer shuts off quickly after being unplugged from wall
If the computer is not holding a charge, you have to buy a new battery from the Lenovo website for your model computer, then push in the clips, pull out the existing battery, and slide in the replacement battery. After this your Lenovo IdeaPad should be able to properly operate without having to be plugged into the wall.
Constant Freezing
The computer freezes intermittently with regular usage.
Windows requires updates
Some problems relating with system performance can be resolved by installing updates to Windows.
Computer cooling system needs to be cleaned
If the heat sink becomes clogged with dust, the system may not be able to effectively cool the processor. You could clean the heat sink with an air duster, or manually by removing the bottom cover and using a soft brush to remove dust.
Windows is cluttered
Sometimes the best way to fix a poorly performing system is to completely reinstall the OS.
