Unresponsive touchpad
The touchpad does not respond to your finger contact.
Out-of-date Drivers
A common reason for an unresponsive touchpad is using out-of-date drivers. To update your drivers please navigate to the this link.
Select the drop down menu entitled, “Driver-Keyboard, Mouse and Input Devices”. Find the section for “Synaptics Touchpad Driver” and select download. Open the downloaded files, and follow the onscreen instructions. Afterwards, restart your device and see if your problem has been fixed.
Hardware Malfunction Test
If installing new drivers for your computer didn’t work, you can run a hardware test using the following steps to see if your touchpad is still functional. Hold the power button for 5 seconds to power off the computer. Turn on the computer and immediately press the F2 key repeatedly. The HP PC Hardware Diagnostics (UEFI) main menu will display. Select “Component Tests.” Next, initiate the “Mouse/Touchpad” test. There are two mouse tests to determine if the mouse is functioning properly. Select either the “Pointer Test” or the “Drag and Drop Test” and follow the instructions.
If the test passes then initiate a system refresh(repair) detailed in the next section.
If the test fails then there is a hardware failure and the touchpad would need to be replaced to properly work again.
Malfunctioning Files
If the hardware test you completed in the previous section was successful, then continue on to do a system refresh. This is a repair method that will refresh your computer, repairing any broken files that may be causing your touchpad issues, without affecting any of your personal files or documents. Go to the Start screen located at the bottom left hand of your computer, and type “refresh” into the search bar. Then select “Refresh your PC without affecting your files” from the search results. Under “Refresh your PC without affecting your files,” click “Get Started.” On the Refresh your PC screen, click “Next.” Click “Next” again, and when ready, click “Refresh.” Wait while Windows refreshes your computer. This process will take a while, and then your computer will restart.
Blank screen after startup
The device is turned on but the screen remains off.
Malfunctioning operating system
Sometimes hardware can malfunction and overload the last time it was used. To clear the slate on your computer’s short term memory you can perform a hard reset. First unplug any peripheral devices such as headphones, or a mouse. Next, disconnect the A/C adapter and also remove your computer’s battery. Once done hold down the power button for about 15-20 seconds to drain any residual energy. Reconnect the A/C adapter and battery, but do not plug in any peripherals, and boot the device. If the start menu appears, use the arrow keys to select “Start Windows Normally” and press enter. After windows boots, reconnect any peripherals one at a time.
Broken/Malfunctioning Display
A possible cause for a blank screen could be issues with the device’s display hardware. To test whether this is the issue, attempt to connect your device to an external monitor. First, locate both an HDMI cable and an HDMI compatible monitor/tv. Plug in one end of the HDMI to the device and the other to the external display port. Turn on the external display and ensure it is set to the correct input (HDMI 1/2/3/4/etc.) Power on your device. If the external display loads your screen while your computer continues to fail to do so, this means there is a hardware issue with your device.
No sound from speakers
You have trouble listening to sounds on your computer.
Speaker Hardware Malfunctioning/Broken
If you are having issues with audio from your device, attempt to test audio from an alternate source. Plug in headphones to your device and test for audio. If audio is heard from the headphones, your speakers could be faulty. On the bottom right side of your screen, right-click the volume control and select “Troubleshoot sound problems”. Follow the onscreen instructions and test your audio again after.
If the problem persists, follow our guide to replace your speakers here.
Wireless networking issues
You have trouble connecting to a wireless network.
Incorrect Wifi Settings

Right click on the network icon located on the task bar near the clock, and select “Troubleshoot Problems” to run the “Windows Network Diagnostic” routine. After the automated troubleshooting has completed, read the information on the pop-up on the screen. If any problems are found , this window will show what issues need to be fix and how you can resolve the problems. Once completed close the window and try to reconnect to the Internet again.
Router Malfunctioning
Often a simple router check can solve many Wifi issues. First make sure sure your router is plugged in and turned on. Once you confirm your router is turned on and all the required cables are plugged in properly, check to see if it sending out a Wifi signal. Since all routers are different, we recommend you search for your specific router online to check to make sure it is functioning properly. If your router is not sending a Wifi signal, try resetting the router by turning it off and on again. If your router is still not working, contact your service provider for additional assistance with Wifi/Router related problems.
