ASUS V6800V

The ASUS V6800V is a top of the line laptop from 2005. It is built with a solid carbon fiber metal alloy composite material in a nearly 1 inch thin chassis. It comes with a built in microphone, a pentium M processor, 512MB of RAM, an 60GB hard drive, and an ATI x600 graphics card.

If the DVD drive is not opening, first try to restart the computer. If this doesn't work and it still refuses to open the drive, gently attempt to pull the tray out with your fingers. If fingers do not work, more extreme measures may be required (such as a screwdriver). Just be gentle.

If CDs or DVDs are not recognized by the computer despite being properly inserted, you can clean the laser lens to see if that helps. To do this, eject the CD and keep the tray open. While open, you will be able to see the laser lens which needs to be cleaned. It looks like a small piece of glass.

To clean the lens, use a cotton swab or glasses cloth and dip a small tip in at least 95% alcohol (it doesn't take much). Gently wipe the lens once or twice with nearly no pressure. If the display is flickering or only works at certain positions, it is very likely the ribbon cable on the display is broken or has broken loose.

Refer to the section on replacing the screen to open the chassis to take a better look at the cable (it is a flat wire, noted in the tutorial). If you are lucky, it may have only wiggled loose. Re-seat the cable if this is the case.

The laptop randomly shuts down or restarts.

If the laptop gets extremely hot to the touch, then it is possible that it is shutting itself down in an attempt to reduce damage. A good hint that this is the case is when the computer seems to get very slow before finally shutting down.

Try using a compressed air canister and blowing through the air intake slot before disassembling the device. If this doesn't work, it may be very well be a more in depth problem with the thermal paste inside the computer or a problem with the fan. In that case, refer to the respective repair guides.

If the laptop shuts down right after unplugging it from the wall, then the battery is most likely the culprit. Since this laptop is several years old, any original battery is almost certainly dead.

You can attempt to clean the battery connectors by removing the battery and rubbing the copper connectors with alcohol using a clothe. If this doesn't work, the battery may be totally bunk; the last resort may be purchasing a new battery if you can find one online.

If the battery doesn't charge, there are three possible culprits: the battery, the motherboard, or the wall adapter.

First, try cleaning the battery or replacing it (see advice above in section Battery Failure). If you replace the battery and it still doesn't work, try using a friend's wall adapter (of the same model) or buying a new one. If neither of these suggestions help, the worst case scenario is replacing the motherboard. Remember also that your charging problems may be as easy as plugging your charger into a different outlet or a different part of the house. This is often overlooked.

Replacing the motherboard is very costly. It may be advised to look into a completely new computer but keep your options open.
