Your iPod probably won't work unless you have the digitizer or the faceplate on. If the faceplate cracked or broke, you still have the digitzer which can control the touch screen, but your iPod's screen will no longer be protected because the faceplate was the outer protection of the screen. But your iPod will still work. Now if the digitizer and the faceplate broke, now you need to panic. but you can always go to an Apple store and they might repair it for you. Don't worry, as long as you have your digitizer, your okay. :)
