The pump will operate when the steam wand is activated. If you hear the pump running, when you generate steam or even hot water from the steaming wand, the pump is probably operating. If the pump doesn’t make noise when you press the brew cycle button, there could be a wiring fault. Even if the machine is gummed up with mineralization, the pump motor should still make noise. If not, check the wiring for a missing connection. Always prime the pump when the machine has been depleted of water or it has been standing around. If you have had the machine sitting around for a while, you will need to demineralize it. Depending upon how badly it is clogged up, you may not need to remove parts. Use a mixture of equal parts white vinegar and distilled or demineralized water. Fill the water reservoir with 4 cups (1 liter) of the mixture. Heat up the machine. Do not attach the portafilter yet.
