Hello! My name is Sam and I’m a first year Materials Engineering major from Cal Poly SLO. I chose to study materials engineering because I want a major that was broad and applicable to many fields. I feel that with materials the possibilities are endless and the potential in the field excites me.

  • Aspirations— When I was little I wanted to be an Astronaut, and with NASA releasing the application for the Mars mission, the race is on.
  • Skills— I know how to use several CAD programs, excel, and have strong leadership skills. I have the gift to learn quickly and adapt to situations that are thrown at me.
  • Projects/accomplishments—Is there anything you’ve built/made/done that you’re proud of?
  • Repair experience— I have made several repairs on my 2004 Mini Cooper S (with the help of my cousin). The extensive one was fixing a leaking oil pan.
  • Accolades—I am a USA Water Polo Academic All American, recipient of Several scholarships, and have received honorable mention awards for some of my photos in a nation wide competition.
  • Groups/memberships— At Cal Poly I am part of the Cal Poly Swim Club and Zeta Beta Tau Fraternity. Next year I want to join the PolySat team.
  • Hobbies— In my spare time I enjoy working out, taking photos, hiking, reading, and spending time with my friends.
  • Any other fun facts you’d like to add?— I have an 11 year old English Bulldog named Duke and I’ve traveled to Croatia to play water polo with my team.

To the left are two images I’ve shared to showcase my skills as a photographer in my group. The first is a photo of my friend in a hammock; I like this photo because of the strong contrast between the color of the hammock and the grey/white of his outfit. I have had people tell me they interpret it in different ways and I encourage you to do the same if you would like.

The next photo is one I shot for a school assignment. I was feeling quite stressed and overworked at this period in my life and this photo reflects this. The grid fragments the image into 36 even squares that distort the background and the person in the center of the image is fading out. I feel like this represents the disconnect, between them and the world, that students can feel when they reach peak stress.
